Chapter 4 - The Signing of the Ledger

The pen trembled violently in Lucas’s hand as he signed his name across the bottom of the equity transfer documents.
With every stroke of black ink, his fortune, his corporate status, and his high-society standing dissolved into thin air. Three percent of Cole Industries—an asset worth millions—was legally transferred into an irrevocable trust for Sophie Vance, governed by Ethan Cole as the sole independent trustee.
"Get your personal belongings from your desk," Ethan said as soon as the last signature was placed. "Security will escort you out of the building in five minutes. If you ever approach Elena, enter her neighborhood, or attempt to contact her again, the fraud charges will be filed immediately."
Lucas didn't say another word. He didn't even look at Sophie. He snatched his briefcase, turned on his heel, and hurried out of the office, his head bowed in shame as two armed security guards fell into step behind him.
The heavy doors clicked shut, leaving an overwhelming silence in the grand office.
I sank into one of the leather armchairs, my knees giving out as the adrenaline that had sustained me for hours suddenly drained away. I held Sophie close, hiding my face in her soft blanket as warm, quiet tears began to spill down my cheeks.
Ethan walked over, taking the seat opposite me. He didn't offer empty words of comfort; he simply poured a glass of cool water and set it on the table beside me.
"It's over, Elena," Ethan said gently. "He will never hurt you or Sophie again."
"I don't know how to thank you," I sobbed, wiping my eyes. "Twelve hours ago, I didn't know how I was going to feed her tonight. Now... now she has a trust fund?"
"You don't owe me thanks," Ethan said, looking down at Sophie, who reached out a tiny hand toward his thumb. "Lucas misused his authority within my company to harm an innocent woman and child. Correcting that wasn't charity—it was justice."
He paused, looking at me with a thoughtful expression. "However, the trust fund is for Sophie's future. You still need a career, Elena. I looked over your resume last night after I left your apartment."
I blinked through my tears. "My resume?"
"You were the top graduate of your nursing class," Ethan noted. "You spent four years in home health care and senior care before you worked at the nursing home. Cole Industries is currently launching a statewide network of employee wellness clinics and childcare facilities for our working parents. We need a Director of Pediatric Nursing and Health Operations."

My mouth opened, but no words came out. "Ethan... I don't have corporate management experience."
"You managed a high-risk premature baby alone in a freezing apartment on three dollars while searching for solutions," Ethan replied with a faint, genuine smile. "I can teach you corporate management, Elena. You already have the strength."
