Chapter 8 - The Silent Confession

After the gala concluded late that night, Ethan drove me back to my townhouse in his private car.
Sophie was sound asleep upstairs with Maya, who had kindly agreed to babysit for the evening.
The night air was warm and clear, filled with the scent of blooming spring flowers. Ethan walked me up to my front porch, standing under the warm glow of the porch light.
"Thank you for tonight, Ethan," I said, holding my dress slightly off the ground. "For everything you've done for Sophie and me."
Ethan looked down at me, his hands resting in his tuxedo pockets. "Elena... I need to tell you something."
"What is it?" I asked, looking into his deep, intense gaze.
"The night you sent that wrong-number text message," Ethan began softly, "I was sitting in my car outside a late-night pharmacy downtown. I had just left a board meeting where we decided to liquidate a community hospital project to save profit margins. I felt hollow, bitter, and disgusted with the corporate world I was building."
He took a step closer, taking my small hand in his large, warm palm.
"When your text popped up on my phone, asking for seventy dollars for baby formula, I thought it was a scam. But when you apologized and told me to ignore you, something inside me broke open. Driving to your apartment, buying those supplies, and seeing you hold your baby... you didn't just save Sophie that night, Elena. You saved me."
Tears pricked my eyes as I looked at this powerful, noble man who had carried the weight of the world on his shoulders.
"Ethan..." I murmured.
"I’ve fallen in love with you, Elena," Ethan confessed softly, his thumb gently stroking the back of my hand. "And I have loved Sophie from the moment I saw her sleeping in your arms. I don't want to just be your boss or your benefactor. I want to be in your life, if you'll have me."
My heart soared with a pure, unadulterated joy I had never felt before. I stepped closer, closing the distance between us, resting my hand against his cheek.

"I loved you the moment you handed me that stuffed rabbit with the long ears," I whispered.
Ethan smiled, leaning down, and pressed his lips to mine in a tender, deep kiss that swept away every remnant of my painful past.
