Chapter 8 - WHAT THE HOUSE ASSISTANT KEPT

Emily had preserved more than the tablet records.

When Alejandro began changing household procedures, she quietly maintained a private log. Dates Camila stayed overnight. Meals Valeria missed. Staff members dismissed. Instructions falsely attributed to me. Each entry was factual and restrained.

She had also saved the original birthday decorations.

Camila ordered them removed because she said celebrating while I was away encouraged Valeria’s attachment. Emily boxed the balloons, paper stars, and yellow dress Valeria had chosen during our final video call.

Three days after my return, we held the birthday dinner again.

Only a few people attended: Emily, Naomi, Valeria’s pediatric therapist, and two friends from preschool. The cake leaned slightly because I decorated it myself. The pink balloons did not match the tablecloth. Valeria wore the yellow dress.

When everyone sang, she covered her ears at first.

Then she smiled.

Later, she asked whether Camila would come back.

“No.”

“What about Daddy?”

“He will not live here.”

“Is he still my daddy?”

“Yes.”

“Did he choose her because I was bad?”

I knelt in front of her.

“No. Adults sometimes choose what they want over what they are responsible for. That is never the child’s fault.”

She looked down at her hands.

Then she placed the wrapped doll beside the cake and said she wanted to open it tomorrow.
