Chapter 1 - THE RED HEEL

The first thing I saw after eight weeks away was not the pink birthday balloons tied beside the staircase. It was not the small cake plate waiting on the kitchen island or the doll wrapped in pink paper inside my duffel bag.
It was my five-year-old daughter kneeling on the marble floor.
Valeria’s yellow bunny pajamas were dirty. Her blonde hair had tangled around her tear-streaked face, and both hands were stretched in front of her. A red high heel pressed down beside her right hand, pinning the sleeve of her pajamas to the floor.
Camila sat above her with a glass of sparkling wine.
“Cry harder, little leftover,” she said. “Your mother’s gone, and this house doesn’t need you.”
My mission duffel fell from my hand.
Camila turned slowly. She had sleek brown-blonde hair, a navy suit, and the confidence of someone who had been repeatedly assured that the woman standing in front of her would never return in time to object.
“Take your shoe away from my daughter.”
She lifted the heel and smiled.
“You don’t give orders in this house anymore.”
I crossed the foyer before she finished the sentence. I lifted Valeria into my arms and felt her fingers lock around my field jacket. She did not cry loudly. She only buried her face against my neck and held on as though releasing me might make me disappear again.
Then the front door opened.
Alejandro entered wearing an expensive black coat. He froze when he saw me.
For one second, fear crossed his face.
Then he looked at Camila and rushed toward her.
“Camila, what happened?”
Not Valeria.
Not his daughter.
Camila.
That choice told me more than any confession could have.
Emily Wade, the house assistant, appeared near the glass doorway holding a tablet. She looked from Valeria to the heel on the floor and then at me.

I raised my phone and opened a secured file.
“Good,” I said. “Now both of you are standing inside my house.”
