Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN THEY THOUGHT HAD DISAPPEARED

My name is Isabella Grant. I was thirty-four and served as a civilian intelligence officer attached to a joint military task group based in Northern Virginia. The operation that took me away was classified enough that I could not disclose my location, schedule regular calls, or explain why my return date kept changing.

Alejandro knew those conditions before I left.

He also knew Valeria was supposed to remain in our McLean home with him, Emily, and a vetted childcare team. The security plan had been prepared weeks in advance. Medical contacts, school pickups, visitor permissions, and emergency procedures were stored with both the household office and my attorney.

Camila’s name appeared nowhere.

Before deployment, Alejandro described her as a senior strategy consultant helping him manage Grant Meridian Systems, the aerospace-logistics company founded by my late father. Alejandro held the title of chief executive, but titles were not ownership. The company’s controlling shares remained inside the Grant Family Trust. I chaired its voting committee. Alejandro managed daily operations under a renewable employment agreement.

He liked people to believe he had built the company.

I allowed the misunderstanding because correcting every guest at every dinner felt petty. He had increased revenue, hired strong teams, and represented the company well. I believed marriage meant letting a capable partner occupy space without constantly reminding him who had opened the door.

That generosity gradually became his biography.

By the time I left for the mission, Alejandro introduced our mansion as his home, Grant Meridian as his company, and the family trust as “our investment structure.” Camila apparently believed him.

What she did not know was that he owned neither the house nor a controlling interest in the company. His shares were performance units that had not fully vested. His authority over the trust ended the moment I withdrew it.

Most of the fortune he displayed belonged to a structure created before our marriage.

He had access.

He mistook it for possession.
