Chapter 6 - The Recordings

Sophie stabilized before dawn.
Dr. Patel found Mara in the family consultation room, where she sat with both hands wrapped around coffee she had not tasted.
“She’s stable,” he said.
Mara closed her eyes.
The sob that escaped her was quiet and broken, the kind that comes after the body has waited for permission.
Dr. Patel sat across from her. “Mara, I know you know this as a physician. I’m going to say it to you as her doctor anyway. She is alive because she got here in time, and because your team acted fast.”
Mara nodded.
“And because she fought,” she whispered.
“Yes,” he said. “Because she fought.”
Officer Daniel Ross arrived shortly after child protection. Mara had requested him specifically because he handled cases involving minors with patience instead of performance.
The recordings on Sophie’s phone were preserved and transferred properly. No one played them in front of Sophie. Mara listened later in a secure office with her attorney, Officer Ross, a child protection representative, and the hospital legal counsel.
She heard Daniel’s voice.
Not all of it.
Only enough.
Enough to understand what Sophie had carried in silence.
Enough to confirm threats, manipulation, and fear.
Enough to show that the staircase story was not an isolated lie but part of a pattern.
Mara pressed one hand over her mouth and stayed in the chair because leaving would not help Sophie.
Officer Ross stopped the playback.
“We have enough to act,” he said.
Mara looked through the office window toward the ICU hallway.
“Then act.”

Daniel was removed from the hospital under police supervision that morning.
This time, he did not get to explain the story alone.
