Chapter 4 - Eighteen Months
Daniel believed Mara fought the divorce because she hated losing.
He was wrong.
She fought because rushing would have left Sophie alone with him.
For eighteen months, Mara documented everything she could legally document. School absences. Nurse visits. Changes in Sophie’s mood after weekends with Daniel. Conflicting explanations. Medical notes. Photos of old injuries Sophie allowed her to take only after Mara promised they would not be used until she was safe.
She met with a family attorney who specialized in high-conflict custody cases. She worked quietly with the hospital child protection team. She consulted outside physicians to avoid conflicts of interest. She made sure every step could survive court.
Daniel called her obsessive.
A bitter ex-wife.
A woman who could not accept that Sophie had a biological father.
Mara let him talk.
Because Daniel’s arrogance was useful. Men like him make mistakes when they believe everyone else is emotional.
That night, he made the biggest one.
He brought Sophie to Mara’s hospital thinking familiarity would help him. He assumed people would defer to Mara’s conflict of interest and step around her. He assumed the story of another staircase fall would pass through triage like all the other stories had passed through schools, relatives, and neighbors.
But St. Catherine’s had changed its emergency security system after an incident six months earlier.
Every trauma room camera recorded audio and video.
Warning notices were posted throughout the department.
Daniel either did not read them or believed rules existed for other people.
Mara knew exactly where the nearest camera was mounted.
She also knew he had stepped into its range when he leaned close and whispered, “She isn’t even your biological child.”
For a moment, Mara almost thanked him.
Not out loud.
Never out loud.
But that sentence had done what months of documents struggled to do.
It revealed ownership.
