Chapter 5 - Sophie’s Phone

Nurse Emily entered the trauma room holding a clear evidence bag.
“We found this hidden inside her boot,” she said.
Inside was Sophie’s damaged phone.
The screen was cracked. One corner was scraped. But when Emily pressed the button, it lit up.
Daniel saw it.
His calm vanished.
He moved toward the bed too fast.
Security intercepted him before Mara even had to speak. One officer stepped between Daniel and Sophie. Another guided him back with a firm hand.
“What is that?” Daniel demanded.
Mara looked at the screen.
Thirty-seven voice recordings.
She felt the room tilt slightly beneath her.
Sophie had been braver than any adult had given her credit for.
Daniel’s eyes locked on the phone. “That’s private property.”
Dr. Patel’s voice went cold. “It was found on the patient.”
“She’s a child.”
“She is also a patient under protection,” Mara said.
Daniel turned on her. “You planned this.”
“No,” Mara said. “Sophie survived it.”
That was when the monitor alarm changed.
A sharp, urgent sound filled the trauma room.
Dr. Patel moved instantly. “Everyone back. Emily, call respiratory. Get me support now.”
The room transformed into controlled chaos.
Mara stepped back because she had to. Because her daughter needed doctors more than a mother’s hands in that second. Because love sometimes means moving aside for the people who can keep breathing steady.
Daniel looked at her across the noise.
“If she dies, this is your fault.”
Mara stared at him while the team worked over Sophie with calm urgency.

“No,” she said. “Whatever happens next belongs to you.”
Behind him, the camera’s small red recording light continued to glow.
