Chapter 3 - The Adoption

Sophie had been five when Mara first met her.

Daniel had brought his daughter to a hospital fundraiser because his sitter canceled, and Sophie spent most of the evening hiding behind a dessert table with a book about ocean animals. Mara found her there, carefully removing strawberries from a slice of cake and arranging them by size.

“Do you like the cake?” Mara asked.

Sophie looked up suspiciously. “I like the strawberries.”

“Fair.”

“You’re not going to make me dance, are you?”

“Absolutely not. I have a medical license to avoid dancing.”

That was the first time Sophie smiled at her.

Daniel was charming then. Attentive. Grateful that Mara did not treat single fatherhood like a tragedy or a heroic performance. He spoke about Sophie as if she were delicate but adored. Mara believed him.

Years later, after the wedding, Mara became the person Sophie ran to after nightmares. The person who knew she hated mint toothpaste. The person who stayed up making a papier-mâché volcano because Daniel forgot the science fair was the next morning.

When Mara adopted her legally, Sophie cried so hard she got hiccups.

“Does this mean you’re really staying?” she asked.

Mara knelt in front of her and took both of her hands.

“It means I was already staying. Now the papers know too.”

For a while, Mara thought love and paperwork had made Sophie safe.

Then the bruises began showing up with stories attached.

A fall during gym.

A cabinet door.

A staircase.

Always when Mara was working late.

Always when Daniel had been “handling things.”

During the divorce, Sophie finally whispered the truth after three failed attempts.

“He changes when he gets mad,” she said. “But if I tell, I’ll go to foster care.”

Mara held her without promising something she could not yet guarantee.

Then she called her attorney.

And began building the safest case she could.
