Chapter 1 - Inside My Hospital

Mara Whitmore lifted the hospital sheet and froze.
The trauma room went silent around Sophie’s bed. Dr. Patel’s expression changed first, then Nurse Emily’s hand rose toward her mouth, and the young resident in blue scrubs looked down as if professionalism alone could not protect him from what he was seeing.
Sophie lay unconscious beneath the cold emergency-room lights, her small hand resting on the sheet, her brown hair tangled against the pillow. She was thirteen, fragile, and protected now by every doctor, nurse, and monitor in the room.
Daniel Whitmore stood behind Mara with his arms crossed, still wearing the calm face of a man who had rehearsed his story.
“She fell down the stairs again,” he said.
Mara turned slowly.
Tears stood in her eyes, but her voice did not shake.
“That mark matches your belt.”
Daniel’s expression hardened. He stepped closer and lowered his voice.
“She isn’t even your biological child.”
The room went still.
Mara’s eyes lifted toward the black security camera mounted in the corner.
Then she looked back at him.
“The day I adopted her was the day she became my daughter.”
Nurse Emily held up Sophie’s damaged phone inside a clear evidence bag. Daniel’s face changed the moment he saw it.
Recordings.
Proof.
A voice he had never expected Sophie to keep.
Mara stepped between him and the bed.
“And you just confessed inside my hospital.”
Two security officers entered behind Daniel.
For the first time that night, he looked afraid.
And Sophie’s monitor kept beeping steadily, as if the room itself were answering him.
She was still here.
May you like
Still protected.
Still my daughter.
