Chapter 7 - The House Behind the Gates

I went back to the Westchester house once.
Not alone.
Adrian came with me.
So did Meredith.
So did two officers.
The iron gates opened slowly, and for the first time, the property looked different.
Not grand.
Not safe.
Just expensive enough to hide screams from neighbors.
In the kitchen, I stood for a long time near the pantry door.
The floor had been cleaned.
Of course it had.
Daniel loved clean surfaces.
He thought cleanliness erased evidence.

It did not erase memory.
I packed only what was mine.
Clothes.
Files.
My father’s watch.
A small framed photo of Adrian and me as children.
I left behind gowns Daniel had chosen for events where he wanted me decorative and silent.
I left behind jewelry he bought after each apology.
I left behind the version of myself who believed survival required shrinking.
Before leaving, I walked into Daniel’s office.
The wall behind his desk held a framed magazine cover with his face on it.
I took it down.
Not dramatically.
Just enough to see the wall behind it.
There was a small crack in the plaster.
Funny, what a house reveals when you remove the portrait.
A month later, the board removed Daniel as CEO pending legal outcome.
Three months later, Vale Development became Vale Trust Holdings under interim oversight.
My name appeared on the documents this time.
Not hidden.
May you like
Not buried.
Mine.
