Chapter 3 - My Brother Steps Between Us

Daniel leaned over me again, lowering his voice.
“Elena, don’t make this worse.”
Adrian moved so fast the nurse gasped.
He stepped between Daniel and the bed and shoved him back hard enough to rattle the rail.
Daniel stumbled, shock flashing across his polished face.
“Are you insane?” he snapped.
Adrian stood in front of me, chest rising once, fury locked tightly behind his eyes.
Nurse Rachel covered her mouth, stunned.
The monitor beside me beeped faster.
Daniel straightened his suit, trying to recover the room.
“She slipped in the shower.”
Adrian turned slowly.

“That woman is my sister.”
The silence that followed was absolute.
Daniel blinked.
For the first time since I had known him, he looked unprepared.
The nurse looked from Adrian to me.
“Your sister?”
Adrian nodded without taking his eyes off Daniel.
“Yes.”
Daniel gave a short laugh.
“That doesn’t make you objective.”
“No,” Adrian said. “The chart does.”
He picked up the medical file from the tray beside my bed. The text was blurred from where Daniel stood, but the meaning was not.
Adrian’s voice stayed controlled.
“These injuries didn’t come from a fall.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
“You’re making accusations you can’t prove.”
Adrian looked toward the double doors.
“I don’t have to prove them alone.”

Two police officers entered the trauma bay.
Daniel’s confidence cracked before they said a word.
