Chapter 1 - The Lie Beside My Hospital Bed

The first thing I heard when I woke up was my husband lying.
“She slipped in the shower,” Daniel Vale told the nurse.
His voice was smooth.
Concerned.
Almost gentle.
The kind of voice that had made donors trust him, investors admire him, and strangers call me lucky at charity dinners.
I lay in a hospital bed at St. Catherine’s in Westchester, one hand gripping the sheet, my ribs aching every time I tried to breathe too deeply. Fluorescent lights buzzed above me. A monitor beeped beside my head. The room smelled like antiseptic, rainwater, and fear.
Daniel stood close to the bed rail in his black suit, hair perfect, jaw tight beneath the performance.
The nurse looked at me.
“Mrs. Vale, can you tell me what happened?”
Daniel’s fingers tightened on the rail.
“She’s confused,” he said quickly. “She hit her head.”

I tried to speak.
My throat burned.
The last thing I remembered was the kitchen floor rushing toward my face and Daniel whispering, “You should have learned when to stay quiet.”
He had found the audit request.
The one I had sent to protect the company I had built behind his name.
Now he was standing beside my bed, trying to turn violence into clumsiness.
Then the emergency-room doors opened.
My older brother Adrian walked in wearing navy scrubs.
Daniel turned with a relieved smile.
“Doctor,” he said, “my wife is clumsy.”
May you like
Adrian stopped.
And the entire room changed.
