Chapter 7 - Who Owned the Table

Police arrived after reviewing the footage and medical documentation.

Michael was arrested for assault and questioned regarding forgery, coercion, and attempted financial fraud.

Evelyn and Tessa were not led away that night.

They were given one hour to collect personal clothing while security supervised.

Everything purchased by the trust remained in the mansion.

Evelyn attempted to take artwork from the west hall.

The inventory records stopped her.

Tessa claimed several bottles from the wine cellar were gifts.

The purchase receipts said otherwise.

By midnight, their rooms were empty.

The company investigation lasted months.

Michael had not acted alone financially.

Evelyn used one of her consulting entities to invoice Whitmore Property Group for services never performed.

Tessa charged personal travel and clothing to an event budget she had no authority to control.

Michael planned to use the forged transfer to approve those expenses retroactively.

The board removed every access point they had created.

The trust recovered most of the money.

Michael accepted a plea involving assault, forgery, and attempted theft from trust assets.

Our divorce followed.

He argued that his work in the company entitled him to compensation.

Records showed he had already paid himself generously for a position he created without approval.

The mansion remained mine through the trust.

So did the company.

My arm healed slowly.

For several weeks, I still needed help cutting food.

The first dinner after the cast came off, I sat alone at the long table.

The room felt too large.

Then I invited the people who had helped me.

Dr. Nolan.

The hospital advocate.

Miriam.

Several staff members Evelyn had dismissed.

We ate beneath the same chandelier.

No one sat at the head until Miriam asked why I was standing.

I looked at the chair.

For months, Michael used that seat as a symbol.

He believed the head of the table belonged to the person who spoke loudest.

My father taught me something different.

Authority belonged to the person responsible for what happened after everyone stopped talking.

I sat down.

Miriam raised her glass.

“To valuable lessons.”

This time, I smiled without fear.

Michael’s family believed my cast made me weak.

It only made their cruelty visible.

They believed living inside my mansion made it theirs.

They confused permission with ownership.

And they believed marriage placed Michael in charge.

They never read the trust.
