Chapter 4 - The Cast Recorded Everything

At the hospital, Michael remained beside me during every conversation.

He answered questions before I could.

He told the doctor I had slipped while carrying files.

When the nurse asked whether I felt safe at home, he placed one hand on my shoulder.

I said yes.

That answer kept me alive long enough to prepare.

The orthopedic specialist was an old client of my father’s company.

Dr. Nolan recognized the fear I was trying to hide.

When Michael left the room to take a call, Nolan asked again.

“Did you fall?”

“No.”

He did not ask for details in front of staff Michael might question later.

He documented the fracture pattern accurately and referred me to a hospital advocate.

Before discharge, the advocate placed a small audio recorder inside the outer padding of my sling.

It was legal for me to record conversations in our state when I participated in them.

The device looked like part of the medical support.

Michael never examined it.

For two days, it captured everything.

Evelyn saying the injury might finally make me reasonable.

Tessa asking which bedroom she could take after I moved into a rehabilitation facility.

Michael explaining that once I signed the transfer, the board would be told I had suffered a breakdown following my father’s death.

They planned to call my refusal instability.

My injury an accident.

My removal a medical necessity.

At dinner, when Michael cut my food and told me cooperation made life easier, the recorder captured that too.

The cast was not a symbol of helplessness.

It was carrying the one witness Michael never thought to silence.
