Chapter 3 - The Fall That Never Happened

My arm was not broken on the stairs.

That was Michael’s version.

The real argument began inside the study.

He placed a stack of documents on my father’s desk.

The papers transferred management authority over Whitmore Property Group into a newly formed company called MWE Holdings.

Michael.

Whitmore.

Evelyn.

The initials were almost insulting in their simplicity.

“You need to sign before the board meeting,” he said.

“No.”

“You haven’t read it.”

“I read enough.”

The agreement gave Michael operational control.

Evelyn received a paid advisory position.

Tessa gained authority over the mansion’s hospitality and events budget.

My signature would reduce me to a beneficiary waiting for distributions from property I already controlled.

“Your father built a family company,” Michael said. “You’re treating it like a personal toy.”

“My father built it for me.”

“He expected you to have a husband.”

“He expected me to read.”

Michael’s face changed.

He grabbed my wrist.

I pulled away.

He twisted harder.

When I refused to release the documents, he shoved me against the edge of the desk.

My arm took the impact.

The fracture happened before I reached the floor.

Michael stood over me while I struggled to breathe.

Then he collected the papers.

“You fell,” he said.

Evelyn entered minutes later.

She looked at my arm.

Then at Michael.

“Did she sign?”

That was when I understood the violence had not surprised her.

It had only failed to produce the result she wanted.
