Chapter 1 - To Valuable Lessons

Michael cut my steak into tiny pieces as though I were a child.
The knife struck the china hard enough to make the silverware jump.
Then he shoved the plate toward me.
“See? Life gets easier when you cooperate.”
His voice was low, almost affectionate.
That made the humiliation worse.
My right arm rested inside a white cast, secured against my body by a navy sling. The skin beneath it still throbbed where the fracture had been set two days earlier.
Across the table, my mother-in-law lifted her wineglass.
“Michael finally taught you a lesson.”
Evelyn smiled as if my injury were evidence of successful parenting.
Beside her, my sister-in-law Tessa laughed softly.
“She really thought this house was hers.”
I looked around the dining room.
The crystal chandelier.
The dark walnut paneling.
The white roses from my greenhouse.
The tall windows overlooking the lake my father had loved.
Michael’s family had lived inside my mansion for six months.
Now they spoke as if I were the guest.
My fingers tightened around the stem of my glass.
The movement hurt.
I raised it anyway.
“To valuable lessons.”
Michael’s expression changed.
He recognized that smile.
It was the one I wore in negotiations when someone had misunderstood a contract and had not yet realized how badly.
His phone vibrated against the table.
He glanced down.
BANK SECURITY: ACCOUNT ACCESS SUSPENDED.
He flipped the phone facedown.
“Something wrong?” I asked.
“Nothing you would understand.”
The doorbell rang.
Tessa stopped smiling.
Evelyn turned toward the hallway.
Michael pushed his chair back.
“Who could that be?”
May you like
I took a slow sip of wine.
“Someone’s here to explain who’s really in charge.”
