Chapter 6 - The People at the Door

Michael reached the front hall first.
He opened the door with Evelyn and Tessa behind him.
My attorney, Miriam Cole, stood on the porch carrying a document case.
Beside her were the trust’s independent co-trustee and two licensed security officers.
Michael tried to close the door.
The security officer held it open.
“This is private property,” Michael said.
Miriam looked at him.
“Yes.”
He waited.
The word did not help him.
Miriam entered and placed the emergency order on the console table.
“Mr. Hale, your delegated access to Whitmore trust assets has been suspended.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
“This is my son’s marital home.”
“The property belongs to the Whitmore Family Trust.”
“Marriage creates rights.”
“Not the ones you attempted to forge.”
Michael looked toward me.
I remained seated at the head of the dining table.
“What did you send her?”
“Everything.”
Miriam opened the document case.
She played the study footage first.
Michael’s hand closed around my wrist on screen.
Then came the shove.
Then my body striking the desk.
Evelyn’s recorded voice followed.
Did she sign?
Tessa covered her mouth.
Evelyn did not.
She stared at me with pure hatred.
“You recorded family conversations?”
“No,” I said. “I preserved evidence.”
Michael’s face went pale when Miriam displayed the forged transfer papers and metadata.
Then the recorder inside my sling captured his next words.
“You were supposed to be too scared to fight this.”

The room went silent.
He had just confessed to the entire structure of the plan without realizing the device was still running.
