Chapter 3 - THE CHROME CRAFTSMANSHIP

Working together in the shade of a large oak tree near Duke’s heavy custom motorcycle, the biker and the young boy turned the edge of the park into a temporary assembly shop. Duke had brought a set of custom, ultra-lightweight fiberglass and aluminum panels—removable vintage-car body pieces that he had carefully pre-cut and painted in a gleaming cherry-red finish with bright chrome trim.
Ben took complete charge of the artistic direction. Sitting proudly in his chair, he pointed out precisely where each decorative panel, chrome badge, and vinyl trim accent should align.
"A little higher on the left fender, Duke," Ben directed, watching critically. "It needs to match the angle of the armrest."
"You got it, Chief," Duke replied cheerfully, carefully tightening a quick-release rubber bracket around the wheelchair's lower tubular steel frame.
Duke was meticulous, double-checking every safety point. He spun the large rear drive wheels by hand to ensure a full three inches of clearance between the rubber treads and the lightweight cherry-red panels. He tested the power cable routing, verified that the emergency cut-off switch was completely unobstructed, and ensured the black joystick moved freely through its full range of motion without touching the newly installed chrome trim.
When the final clip snapped into place, the transformation was breathtaking.
The black power wheelchair had been seamlessly encased within a lightweight, miniature 1950s cruiser body shell. It boasted rounded front fenders, polished aluminum trim lines, and a smooth rear tail fin accent, while remaining entirely functional, safe, and easily maneuverable.

Ben placed his hand on the joystick and nudged it forward. The chair glided smoothly across the grass, the cherry-red panels glinting under the morning sun without a single rattle or rub.
"She runs like a dream," Ben declared, his voice filled with overwhelming joy.
