Chapter 9 - THE LESSON IN THE OAK

Adrian slowly stood up from his leather chair.

He didn't look at Dominic kneeling on the floor. He didn't look at Marcus or the armed guards. He walked around his desk, his heavy leather shoes coming to a stop directly in front of Elena and Mia.

He knelt down on one knee on the cream rug, bringing his massive, tattooed frame level with the three-year-old girl. His dark, sharp face softened just a fraction—an impossible transformation for a man known as a ruthless monster.

He reached out his broad, calloused hand and gently straightened the crooked pink satin bow in Mia’s curly hair.

"You did a good thing today, Mia," Adrian said, his gravelly baritone quiet and gentle.

Mia looked at him, her small mouth forming a little 'O' of surprise. "Did I fix you?"

A very faint, razor-thin smile touched the corner of Adrian Moretti’s lips—the first true smile to cross his face in over five years.

"Yes," Adrian whispered. "You fixed a lot of things."

He looked up at Elena, whose eyes were wide with a mix of shock and profound relief.

"Your husband was a loyal man, Elena," Adrian said, his voice returning to its solid, authoritative weight. "His name will be cleared today. And you and your daughter will be taken care of for the rest of your lives. You have my word on the Moretti name."

Elena sank against the wall, fresh tears of relief washing over her face as she nodded silently, clutching Mia tight against her chest.

Adrian stood up to his full height, turning his broad shoulders back toward the kneeling lieutenant on the carpet. The gentle softness in his expression vanished instantly, replaced by the dark, icy mask of the Moretti family leader.

"Marcus," Adrian commanded.

"Yes, Boss?"

"Take Dominic down to the basement holding rooms," Adrian ordered, his tone flat and unyielding. "Retrieve the documents from safety deposit box four-seventeen. We have thirty years of debts to collect before the sun sets."

"Right away, Boss," Marcus answered, grabbing Dominic by his collar and hauling the weeping man off his knees, dragging him out through the private side exit.
