Chapter 10 - THE MORNING SUN

The heavy oak doors were secured once more, and the shattered glass and spilled coffee were cleaned from the parquet floor by two trusted staff members.
The morning sun had risen higher in the sky, casting long, brilliant beams of light through the arched windows of the Moretti mansion, filling the oak-paneled office with a warm, golden glow. The air felt lighter, cleared of the suffocating paranoia that had hung over the estate for decades.
Adrian sat behind his mahogany desk once more.
Resting on his leather blotter were the two brass keys—the tarnished 417 key and the delicate filigree key. Side by side, they no longer represented a threat or a hidden betrayal; they represented total, absolute control over his family's legacy.
A soft knock sounded at the open office door.
Elena stood in the doorway, dressed in a fresh apron, holding a small silver tray with a single porcelain cup of fresh black coffee. Beside her, clutching her mother's skirt, was Mia, holding a fresh ceramic bowl of warm oatmeal and a tiny plastic spoon.
Adrian looked up from his desk.
"Come in," he said softly.
Elena walked in gracefully, setting the coffee cup on the corner of his desk with a quiet, respectful smile. "Thank you, Mr. Moretti. For everything."
"You don't need to thank me, Elena," Adrian replied, taking a sip of the dark espresso. "This house owes your family a debt that can't be repaid with words."
Mia didn't wait for her mother's permission. She marched right past the desk, stepped between Adrian’s knees once again, and raised the plastic spoon filled with oatmeal up toward his face.
"You need more," Mia bossed, her brown eyes shining with complete authority. "So you don't forget to smile again."
Adrian Moretti—the most feared man in the city, the leader of a billion-dollar empire, and the holder of the secrets of New York—looked down at the tiny girl in the pink floral dress.

He leaned forward, opened his mouth, and took the spoonful of oatmeal without a single word of complaint.
As the morning sun flooded the lavish room, illuminating the gold leaf and crystal chandeliers of the estate, the crime boss smiled warmly at the little girl who had saved his family from the shadows of its own past.
