Chapter 5 - THE SECOND KEY

Unlike the first key stamped 417, which was heavy, tarnished, and functional, this second key was entirely different in craft and appearance. It was slightly smaller, made of pale, untarnished yellow brass that gleamed sharply under the overhead lights. Its bow was intricately carved with fine, circular filigree, and its blade bore no stamped numbers—only three distinct, razor-sharp notches cut into the lower edge.
It looked older, far more delicate, and infinitely more deliberate.
Adrian stared at the small object resting in the child's hand. For the second time that morning, the absolute composure of the Moretti family leader wavered. He slowly reached down with his large, calloused hand, his fingers tattooed to the knuckles, and gently lifted the second brass key from Mia’s palm.
The touch was impossibly light, a stark contrast to his massive frame.
"Marcus," Adrian called out softly.
Marcus stepped forward immediately, closing the distance in two broad strides. The security chief leaned over Adrian’s shoulder, his eyes locking onto the pale yellow brass key resting against Adrian’s palm.
The moment Marcus saw the filigree bow and the three distinct notches, his usual stone-cold composure cracked completely. His jaw dropped an inch, his eyes widening in pure, unadulterated shock.
"God in heaven..." Marcus breathed, his voice barely a whisper. "Boss... that’s..."
"I know what it is," Adrian cut in, his tone suddenly dropping into an icy, lethal quiet that made Marcus instantly shut his mouth.
Behind them, near the open double doors of the office, stood the five trusted lieutenants who had attended the morning meeting in the sitting room. They had lingered in the hallway after hearing the loud crash of the silver tray and shattered porcelain, standing near the doorway to ensure their leader was safe.
Among them was Dominic—a fifty-year-old veteran lieutenant with graying temples, a dark tailored Italian suit, and thirty years of service to the Moretti family name.
Dominic leaned past the doorframe to see what had caused the commotion. His eyes passed over Elena, passed over the spilled coffee, and locked directly onto the second brass key held high in Adrian’s hand.
The moment Dominic saw the pale yellow brass filigree, every drop of color drained from his face.
His skin turned a sickening, chalky gray. His chest locked, his eyes bulging with a sudden, suffocating panic. He didn't speak. He didn't draw a weapon.
Slowly—almost silently—Dominic took a step backward into the carpeted hallway.

Then another step.
He began quietly backing away toward the grand staircase, intending to vanish into the estate's private corridors before anyone noticed his exit.
