Chapter 4 - THE HIDDEN POCKET

The silence that filled the office after Adrian’s accusation was heavy enough to crush glass. Elena remained frozen near the doorway, her breath coming in shallow, frantic gasps, her hands clutching at her staff apron as if it could shield her from the man towering behind the desk.
Marcus shifted his weight, his large frame positioning itself subtly between Elena and the main exit, his face returning to its unreadable, stone-like composure.
Adrian walked around his mahogany desk, his heavy leather shoes stepping cleanly over the dark puddle of spilled espresso and shattered porcelain. He stopped three feet from Elena, his imposing physique shutting out the morning light from the windows. He looked down at her, his expression cold and unyielding.
"My father built this desk in nineteen-seventy-eight," Adrian said, his voice a low, rhythmic purr. "There are compartments in this room that even I haven't opened in twenty years. And yet, the moment my housekeeper sees a piece of tarnished brass, she drops my silver and loses her breath."
"Mr. Moretti, please," Elena begged, her eyes brimming with unshed tears. "I swear... I just lost my footing. Mia shouldn't have been in here. I'll take her away right now—"
"Mommy, don't be scared," a small voice interrupted.
Everyone’s attention snapped down.
Mia had crawled out from behind Adrian’s legs, standing right between the giant crime boss and her terrified mother. She reached up and tugged gently on Elena’s black uniform skirt, her small face twisted into a look of profound childhood confusion.
Mia looked at the brass key stamped 417 still held in her left hand, then looked up at Adrian’s dark, intense face.
"But this isn’t the one I found first," Mia said plainly.
The entire room seemed to hold its breath.
Adrian’s eyes narrowed to sharp slits. "What did you say, Mia?"
Mia tilted her head, her curly hair bouncing against her shoulders. "I found two things. But the first one was hiding in the little secret box under the big leg."
Before Elena could reach out to stop her, Mia reached into her elaborate pink floral dress. Hidden within the folds of the puffed skirt was a tiny, hand-stitched interior pocket—a detail sewn into the dress by her mother to keep small toys.
Mia’s tiny fingers dipped into the pocket.

She pulled her hand out and held it flat under the bright chandelier light.
Resting in the center of her tiny palm was a second brass key.
