Chapter 1 - THE OATMEAL SPOON

The morning light streaming through the floor-to-ceiling arched windows of the Moretti estate was crisp and golden, illuminating the delicate crystal prisms of the massive central chandelier. The sitting room was an imposing display of European opulence—gilded molding, cream-and-gold silk upholstered chairs, polished marble flooring, and hand-woven Persian rugs. Yet despite the lavish surroundings, the atmosphere inside the room was heavy, suffocating, and thick with tension.

Sitting at the center of the room in an ornate cream-and-gold armchair was Adrian Moretti. At forty years old, Adrian was a figure who commanded total, absolute terror across the entire eastern seaboard. He was built like an elite athlete—tall, impossibly broad-shouldered, with sharp, marble-carved facial features and dark, swept-back hair that shimmered under the chandelier lights. Because this was a private morning assembly within the secured walls of his personal estate, Adrian was dressed down, though no less intimidating: a fitted black silk button-down shirt unbuttoned low past his chest, revealing dark, intricate ink spilling across his collarbones and creeping up the sides of his neck. His tailored black trousers sat sharply over polished leather shoes, and a sleek stainless-steel luxury watch caught the morning glare on his thick, tattooed wrist.

Arranged around him in a semicircle of rigid tension were five of his most powerful lieutenants and trusted advisors, all broad men in dark tailored suits. They sat stiffly on the edges of their gilded seats, leather folders resting on their knees, waiting for Adrian to speak. Standing behind Adrian’s left shoulder was Marcus, his forty-two-year-old chief of security—a towering, granite-faced man in a charcoal suit whose eyes never stopped scanning the room.

Then, breaking the heavy silence, came the tiny, squeaky patter of soft shoes against marble.

Three-year-old Mia Rossi stood directly in front of the feared crime boss. She was tiny, with a thick crown of curly light-brown hair held back by an oversized pink satin bow, wearing an elaborate pink floral dress with puffed sleeves. In her tiny hands, she clutched a small ceramic bowl half-filled with warm oatmeal. She was completely, blissfully oblivious to the fact that every adult male in the room held the power of life and death, or that Adrian Moretti’s name made hardened criminals weep.

Mia dug a plastic toddler spoon into the oats, held it up high toward Adrian’s broad, tattooed chest, and stepped right between his knees.

"Open your mouth," Mia commanded loudly.

Every single man in the room froze.

Marcus’s hand twitched near his jacket lapel before he checked himself. The five lieutenants locked their jaws, their eyes wide with absolute horror as they stared at the three-year-old child ordering the most dangerous man in the city to eat porridge.

Adrian didn't move. He lowered his sharp, dark eyes, looking down at the tiny girl standing between his knees. The silence in the sitting room stretched for five agonized seconds.

Mia didn't back down. She stomped one tiny pink shoe against the marble.

"Open," she repeated, her tone bossy and firm.

After a long beat, the legendary crime boss did something no man present had ever witnessed: Adrian slowly leaned forward, parted his lips, and allowed the three-year-old girl to feed him a spoonful of warm oatmeal.

Across the room, one of the lieutenants let out a tiny, choked puff of air—a laugh that was instantly smothered by a violent cough into his hand when Marcus glared at him.

Mia withdrew the spoon, satisfied, and studied Adrian’s harsh, unreadable face with deadly seriousness. She leaned in closer, squinting her big brown eyes.

"Why don’t you smile?" Mia asked softly.

Adrian looked at her, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that vibrated through the quiet room. "I forgot how."

May you like

Mia reached up with her tiny, warm hand and gently patted his razor-sharp cheek, her thumb brushing against his stubble.

"I can fix you," Mia whispered.
