Chapter 4 - The Zurich Cipher

The cold voice reverberating from the ceiling speakers seemed to freeze the blood in Rico’s veins.

Clara remained on her knees on the marble floor, her left hand still cradling three-year-old Leo against her hip. The child had buried his face into the cream canvas of her server apron, his small fingers clutched tightly in the fabric as if he intuitively recognized that the safest place in the world was right beside her.

"Dante," Rico hissed, his voice dropping into a lethal, guttural frequency as he slowly rose from his leather armchair. "Secure the doors. Nobody leaves this room. Nobody."

Dante didn't hesitate. He pulled his heavy 9mm suppressed pistol from his shoulder holster in one fluid, terrifying movement, stepping back toward the main entry doors and engaging the heavy brass deadbolts with two loud, sharp clicks.

Clara looked up from the floor, her blue eyes wide with rising panic as she saw the armed man guarding the door. "What is going on here?" she demanded, her voice shaking but resolute. "Who are you people? Why did you lock the doors?!"

Rico stepped over the shattered porcelain and spilled truffle risotto, stopping two feet away from Clara. He dropped to one knee, bringing his eyes level with hers.

The lethal capo—a man feared across three states for his ruthless, unyielding brutality—had tears brimming in his dark eyes as he looked into her face.

"Clara," Rico said, his voice trembling with an overwhelming torrent of grief and awe. "Look at me. Look at my face. Do you really not know who I am?"

Clara stared at the sharp, aristocratic contours of his face—the dark wavy hair, the intense brown eyes, the faint silver scar running along the edge of his jawline. A sudden, agonizing headache throbbed behind her temples, like a blunt needle pressing against her brain.

"I... I don't know you..." Clara stammered, pulling Leo closer to her chest. "I’ve worked at this restaurant for three days! I’m just a waitress!"

"Your name isn't Clara Vance," Rico whispered, reaching out a trembling, gloved finger, hovering it half an inch from her cheek, afraid that if he touched her she would vanish like a phantom. "Your name is Isabella Moretti. You are my wife. And you are that boy's mother."
