Chapter 1 - The Shattered Porcelain of Il Destino

The private dining room of Il Destino—the most exclusive, high-security fine-dining establishment in the city’s historic district—was an opulent sanctuary of polished Venetian plaster, custom walnut paneling, and heavy velvet drapes. Hanging from the center of the coffered ceiling was a massive, twelve-arm crystal chandelier that cast a warm, glittering radiance across the room’s white-marble tile floor. At the center of the space sat a grand circular dining table draped in crisp, double-lined white linen, set with heavy sterling silverware, stemless crystal goblets, and fresh white calla lilies.
Yet, despite the quiet luxury of the room, the air was suffocating, charged with a volatile tension that hung over the table like a storm cloud.
Sitting in a high-backed leather dining chair was three-year-old Leo Moretti. He was dressed like a miniature prince—a pristine white dress shirt, a neatly tied maroon velvet bow tie, a matching maroon vest, and tailored dark trousers. In his left arm, he clutched a small, worn brown teddy bear with frayed ribbon around its neck. Leo’s face was bright red, wet with tears, his chest heaving with frantic, shuddering gasps.
Without warning, the child let out an ear-piercing, hysterical scream that echoed off the hard marble walls. With a sudden, explosive heave of his tiny arms, Leo swept his hands across his gold-rimmed rimmed plate.
CRASH.
The heavy porcelain plate, laden with warm, aromatic truffle risotto, flew off the edge of the circular table. It crashed violently onto the white-marble tile floorboards, shattering into dozens of sharp white fragments. Golden olive oil, rich cream sauce, and delicate rice grains splattered across the polished marble floor, splashing against the pristine leather shoes of the men sitting nearby.
At the head of the table sat thirty-two-year-old Ricardo "Rico" Moretti, the undisputed capo of the regional syndicate. Rico was a picture of dangerous, dark intensity—wavy dark hair combed back neatly, wearing a bespoke, fitted navy Brioni suit, a crisp white dress shirt, and a dark silk tie. His jaw was clenched so tightly that a muscle twitched rapidly near his earlobe.
Rico slammed his right palm down onto the linen table with deafening force, making the crystal goblets ring like bells.
"Make him stop!" Rico roared, his deep, gravelly voice trembling with a mixture of raw exhaustion and lethal authority.
Standing directly behind Rico’s chair was Dante, his forty-year-old head of security. Dante was a towering, heavily built man with a completely bald head, a razor-sharp goatee, and a cold, emotionless face. Dressed in a tailored black suit and dark tie, Dante’s right hand hovered half an inch above the unbuttoned jacket flap covering his shoulder holster. His eyes scanned the corners of the room with relentless vigilance.
Through the heavy swinging mahogany service door stepped Clara Vance. Twenty-four years old, Clara was a young waitress working her first week at Il Destino. Her long brown hair was styled in a low, slightly messy bun at the nape of her neck. She wore a simple light blue button-up shirt beneath a long, cream-colored canvas server apron tied snugly around her waist.
In her right hand, Clara carried a small, heavy crystal tumbler filled with steamed, warm milk, a tiny pinch of grated cinnamon dusting its creamy surface.

As she stepped into the private dining room, her soft rubber-soled shoes making no sound against the marble, Rico turned his head slowly. His dark, intense eyes locked onto her with a murderous, calculating glare.
"Who are you?" Rico growled, his hand remaining flat on the table, his posture rising like a predator preparing to strike.
