Chapter 3 - The Shadow Behind the Glass

The room was so still that the faint hum of the building's climate control system sounded like a roar.

Clara felt a sudden, violent surge of cold electricity bolt through her spine at the touch of the boy’s hand against her skin. Her mind spun wildly into a void of strange, disjointed fragments—flashes of a nursery with yellow wallpaper, the smell of lavender soap, the sound of a lullaby she didn't remember learning, and the terrifying screech of tearing metal.

She looked into Leo’s eyes, her own eyes swelling with sudden, unexplainable tears. "Leo..." she whispered softly, the name slipping from her tongue without her conscious thought.

Before Rico could stand up from his chair to pull his son back, a soft, buzzing vibration rattled the silent room.

Inside Dante’s inner jacket pocket, his encrypted satellite smartphone was vibrating.

Dante reached into his suit coat with a swift, practiced motion, pulling out the sleek black device. He tapped the screen to view a newly arrived high-priority media message.

The moment the image loaded on the high-definition monitor, Dante’s heavily built frame went completely rigid.

The stone-cold, emotionless expression that the head of security had maintained through a decade of gang wars and violent mob takeovers instantly shattered. Dante’s face went chalk-white. His lower lip quivered slightly as his eyes dilated in profound, terrifying panic.

Dante didn't say a word. He slowly turned the smartphone screen around, extending his arm so Rico could see the display.

Rico lowered his gaze to the glowing screen.

Displayed on the phone was a high-resolution photograph taken four years ago inside a private medical wing in Zurich. It showed a pregnant woman lying in an induced coma, her face identical to Clara’s face, surrounded by life-support monitors.

Beneath the photograph was a short, three-word text message written in bold red characters:

SHE IS ALIVE.

Rico’s breath exploded from his lungs in a ragged gasp. He gripped the edge of the marble table so hard his knuckles turned purple.

Suddenly, from the far side of the private dining room, a dark figure stepped up behind the thick, frosted-glass double doors leading to the VIP courtyard.

The soft ambient lights of the garden cast a sharp, elongated silhouette of a tall woman wearing a wide-brimmed hat against the translucent white glass.

A cold, sophisticated female voice echoed through the hidden speaker system built into the private room’s ceiling—a voice that carried an icy, command-level authority.

"Don’t let her remember," the female voice whispered softly into the room.

Clara’s head snapped toward the frosted-glass doors, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs.

Rico whipped his head around toward the shadowy figure in pure, unadulterated terror, realizing that the conspiracy that had destroyed his life four years ago had just walked through the front doors of Il Destino.
