Chapter 2 - The Whispered Recognition

Clara didn't recoil from the terrifying presence of the mafia capo, nor did she flinch at the sight of his armed security detail standing in the shadows. There was a quiet, instinctual calm in her movements, as if some forgotten, deeply buried sense of familiarity was guiding her steps across the ruined marble floor.

She walked smoothly past the shattered porcelain and spilled risotto, keeping her eyes fixed on the weeping three-year-old boy.

Clara slowly lowered her body onto one knee beside Leo’s chair, her cream-colored apron resting directly against the marble floor. She kept her posture soft, open, and entirely non-threatening, ignoring the dark shadow of Dante looming over her shoulder.

"Easy... try this," Clara said softly, her voice smooth, warm, and laced with an unspoken, deeply comforting melody.

She extended the crystal tumbler of warm milk toward the trembling child, holding it at a gentle angle so he could smell the sweet cinnamon steam rising from the rim.

The transformation was instantaneous and shocking.

The second the sound of Clara’s voice reached the little boy’s ears, his frantic, ear-piercing screams cut out completely, as if a switch had been flipped inside his mind. Leo’s small, shivering frame went still. His swollen, tear-filled brown eyes locked onto Clara’s face, his little fingers tightening around his brown teddy bear.

Slowly, with his hands shaking, Leo reached out with both hands and took the crystal tumbler from Clara’s fingers. He brought the glass to his lips and took a small, hesitant sip of the warm milk.

He swallowed. Then he lowered the glass.

Leo reached out his right hand, his tiny, soft fingers extending through the air between them, and gently pressed his palm against Clara’s left cheek.

"Mommy...?" Leo whispered, his sweet, fragile voice echoing through the dead silence of the private dining room.

At the head of the table, Rico Moretti froze in absolute shock.

The color drained from Rico’s face in a sickening, sudden rush. The furious, predatory posture he had held for the last hour completely evaporated, leaving him paralyzed in his leather chair. His dark eyes widened into circles of pure, unadulterated disbelief as he stared at the young waitress kneeling beside his son.

"What did he just call you?" Rico breathed, his voice barely a rasp.
