Chapter 5 - The Anatomy of a Vanguard Strike

The total darkness lasted for three heavy seconds, filled only by the muffled, frantic breathing of the trapped assassin and the steady, rhythmic footfalls of Ethan Vance advancing across the polished marble.

When the scene restored, the camera opened on a sharp, medium shot of the ballroom perimeter. The party guests had pressed themselves back against the grand mahogany walls and marble pillars, creating an open, twenty-foot ring of space around the shattered remnants of the glass pyramid.

Elena stood near the base of a central column, her arms wrapped securely around five-year-old Noah. She held him high on her hip, her hand resting over the back of his head so he couldn't see the violence about to unfold. Noah kept his face buried into Elena’s shoulder, his tiny fingers clutched tightly in the fabric of her white server shirt.

"Stay behind me," Elena whispered softly to the boy, her eyes remaining hyper-focused on the perimeter, watching for any secondary threats that might be lurking among the staff or guests.

In the center of the marble floor, the tattooed assassin realized he was cornered. His dark eyes darted frantically from the locked brass doors guarded by the two massive security officers to the approaching figure of Ethan Vance.

Reaching into the lining of his dark security jacket, the assassin pulled a six-inch combat blade from a concealed sheath. The polished steel blade caught the warm light of the crystal chandeliers, glinting with a lethal threat.

The crowd gasped in horror. Several women ducked behind their husbands, and two older board members scrambled toward the back service corridor.

"Ethan! He has a knife!" a prominent shareholder yelled from the crowd.

Ethan didn't slow his stride by a fraction of an inch. His expression remained terrifyingly impassive—a man who had spent ten years navigating corporate warfare and survival in high-risk foreign territories before building his global empire.

"You brought a knife to a birthday party," Ethan said, his voice flat, calm, and utterly devoid of fear.

The assassin let out a guttural roar, stepping forward on his lead foot, and drove the combat blade straight toward Ethan’s throat in a lethal, professional thrust.
