Chapter 3 - The Shadow Behind the Columns

The silence in the ballroom was absolute, save for the soft, ambient hum of the estate's air filtration system.
Ethan stood frozen on one knee, holding his son tightly against his broad chest, his gaze locked onto Elena’s face. He saw the small cut near her hairline, the thin line of red running down her temple, and the sharp glass fragments caught in the fabric of her black vest—proof that her body had absorbed the full force of the falling crystal to spare his child.
"You... you protected him..." Ethan stammered, his commanding voice dropping into an uncharacteristic whisper.
Before Elena could answer or lift herself fully from the floorboards, five-year-old Noah shifted in his father's arms. He reached his small hand up, touching Ethan’s square jaw to direct his attention, and then raised his index finger again.
This time, Noah pointed past Elena, past the ruined marble area, toward the shadowy perimeter of the room where two massive marble columns met the entrance to the private courtyard.
"That man pushed it," Noah said simply, his voice carrying through the quiet room. "I saw his hand push the bottom glass."
Ethan’s posture went rigid as iron. The atmosphere in the room shifted from emotional distress to a cold, predatory danger.
Slowly, deliberately, Ethan followed his son's small finger.
The camera executed a smooth, sweeping push-through shot, gliding past the horrified, silent party guests in their silk gowns and tuxedos, cutting through the space between the marble columns.
Standing near the shadow of a grand arched exit was a broad-shouldered, tan-skinned security guard. He was massive, built like a heavyweight fighter, with a completely shaved head, cold dark eyes, and a prominent dragon tattoo creeping up the left side of his neck above his collar. He wore a standard black security uniform, but unlike the other estate guards who were moving toward the accident to help, this man was slowly, silently taking small steps backward toward the heavy oak exit doors.
While Ethan’s eyes locked onto the retreating figure, Elena remained on her knees among the shattered crystal. Her hand brushed against the floorboards as she pushed herself up, and her fingers felt something small, dense, and metallic buried beneath a pile of broken glass stems.
She paused, her brown eyes narrowing slightly as she reached down and brushed away a cluster of sharp crystal fragments.
Elena picked up the object.
A macro shot revealed the item held between her fingers: an exquisite, heavy gold cufflink, expertly crafted, featuring a detailed family crest stamped into its polished face—a rising falcon over a crossed sword.
It was the unmistakable family crest of the Vance dynasty.
Elena raised her head, looking past Noah to Ethan, who was now standing up with his son in his arms.
"He wasn't after Noah," Elena said softly, her voice calm, clear, and sharp as a needle.

She turned the heavy gold cufflink over in her palm.
Engraved on the smooth back of the metal was a microscopic, laser-etched laser portrait—a tiny, unmistakable photograph of Ethan Vance himself.
