Chapter 2 - The Miscalculated Accusation

The thunderous crash of collapsing crystal echoed off the marble walls, instantly silencing the live quartet and plunging the grand ballroom into a collective, gasping shock.

In a swift smash-cut close-up, the camera revealed Noah, completely unharmed, tucked tightly beneath the shelter of Elena’s arms and chest. The child’s eyes were wide with wonder and sudden fright, but his skin was untouched, his small navy velvet tuxedo entirely free of glass.

Elena slowly raised her head from the marble floor, her breathing shallow and ragged. She was visibly shaken, her dark hair slightly unraveled from its neat bun. A tiny trickle of dark blood pooled from a small cut on her forehead near her hairline, and her brown eyes watered from the sudden, sharp pain radiating across her back where heavy glass stems had struck her vest.

Through the frozen, stunned crowd of billionaires and socialites, thirty-nine-year-old Ethan Vance came charging like a freight train.

Ethan was an extraordinarily handsome billionaire—tall, powerfully built with a muscular frame under a custom black tuxedo, possessing thick swept-back dark hair, a strong square jaw, and piercing hazel eyes that currently burned with primal panic.

As he broke through the ring of onlookers, his eyes landed on his five-year-old son lying on the floor beneath a housemaid, surrounded by a mountain of shattered, razor-sharp glass.

Conditioned by a lifetime of paranoia, high-stakes security threats, and fierce protectiveness over his motherless child, Ethan instantly assumed the absolute worst. He believed the maid had tripped, knocked the tower over, and fallen on top of his son.

"GET OFF MY SON!" Ethan roared, his voice shaking the crystal wall sconces.

He reached down, grabbed Elena forcefully by her left shoulder, and pulled her away from Noah with aggressive, unyielding strength.

Still dazed from the impact and clutching her aching back, Elena lost her balance on the slick floorboards. She slid across the marble, her hand landing directly among the scattered, broken glass stems.

"Ah!" Elena gasped, pulling her hand back as a piece of glass nipped her palm, her brown eyes looking up at Ethan in shock and confusion.

Ethan paid her no attention. He immediately dropped to one knee, wrapping his powerful arms around Noah and scooping the five-year-old up into his chest, frantically checking the boy’s head, arms, and legs for injuries.

"Noah! Noah, look at me! Are you hurt? Did she hurt you?" Ethan demanded, his heart hammering against his ribs.

Noah, however, didn't cry. He pulled back slightly from his father’s grip, his bright-blue eyes fixed entirely on Elena, who was struggling to sit up on the glass-covered floorboards.

Noah extended his small arm, pointing his tiny finger directly at Elena.

"Dad! She saved me!" Noah shouted, his sweet voice clear and firm. "The glass fell and she jumped on top of me so I wouldn't get hurt!"

Ethan froze.

An extreme close-up captured the rapid, dramatic shift across Ethan's face. The terrifying, murderous rage that had filled his hazel eyes drained away in a single second, replaced by a sudden wave of profound shock, utter confusion, and crushing guilt as he looked down at the bleeding maid sitting in the glass ruins.
