Chapter 4 - The Targeted Betrayal

Ethan looked down at the object in Elena’s hand, his hazel eyes contracting into tiny, lethal points of focus.
The realization hit the room like an invisible shockwave. The glass pyramid had not been an unstable luxury display that accidentally slipped. It had been intentionally rigged, weighted, and shoved from its base—an orchestrated assassination attempt designed to crush Ethan Vance beneath hundreds of pounds of solid crystal as he stood near the cake-cutting platform.
The assassin had miscalculated the timing, releasing the structure while Ethan was across the room greeting guests, almost taking the life of his five-year-old heir instead.
Elena looked up at the broad-shouldered tattooed man, her keen eye catching a missing cufflink on the left sleeve of his dark security jacket—the fabric slightly torn where it had snagged on the base frame of the glass pyramid during his escape attempt.
The tattooed guard realized his cover was completely blown.
The moment he saw Ethan’s gaze lock onto his missing cuff, the assassin abandoned all stealth. His eyes widened in panic, he spun around on his heel, and he sprinted at full speed toward the massive, ten-foot-tall carved oak doors leading out of the estate ballroom.
"SECURITY! LOCK THE DOORS!" a guest screamed, triggering a wave of panicked shouts among the wealthy crowd as socialites scattered away from the exit path.
Ethan didn't shout. He didn't lose his temper.
With calm, liquid grace, Ethan stepped forward, carefully handing five-year-old Noah directly into Elena’s arms.
"Keep him safe," Ethan said quietly, his voice carrying an absolute, unshakeable trust that erased every trace of his earlier mistake.
Elena took the small boy into her arms, pulling Noah against her chest, shielding his head with her shoulder as she stood up from the glass-covered floorboards. Noah wrapped his tiny arms securely around Elena’s neck, feeling completely safe in her embrace despite the chaos unfolding around them.
Ethan turned his entire body toward the fleeing assassin.
In a breathtaking final low-angle money shot, the massive ten-foot oak ballroom doors slammed shut with a thunderous BOOM, their heavy brass deadbolts sliding into place just two feet before the tattooed man could reach the handle.
Two colossal, six-foot-four private bodyguards wearing discreet earpieces stepped out from the shadows beside the entry, positioning their wide frames directly in front of the locked exit, blocking every avenue of escape.
The tattooed assassin skidded to a halt on the polished floorboards, his heavy boots squeaking against the marble as he spun around, finding himself trapped inside the grand ballroom.
Ethan slowly reached up with both hands.
With smooth, methodical precision, he unbuttoned his custom black tuxedo jacket, slipped his arms out of the sleeves, and tossed the garment onto a nearby empty champagne table. He reached up, loosened his black silk bow tie with one finger, and rolled his broad right shoulder, his heavy muscles flexing clearly beneath his crisp white shirt.
Ethan stepped forward, his eyes fixed on the trapped killer, his face an ice-cold mask of absolute, terrifying promise.
"You missed," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a low, lethal register that echoed off every marble column in the room.
May you like
The tattooed assassin turned his head slowly, looking past the trapped doors, and stared directly into the eyes of Ethan Vance.
CUT TO BLACK.
