Chapter 9 - THE TRIBUNAL ON THE STONES

Four-year-old Maisie Reed dropped to her knees on the garden border, letting out a loud, joyful cheer as she clapped her small hands together. "He's crying! Adrian, he's breathing!"

Adrian stood on the boiling stone driveway, holding his screaming five-month-old son securely against his broad chest, his large hand gently cradling the back of the baby’s head, smoothing his wet dark curls.

Behind him, Marcus the security guard immediately stepped forward, holding a cold, wet white linen towel that he had fetched from the garden ice bucket.

Adrian gently wrapped the cool, damp towel around Owen’s tiny body, letting the infant’s body temperature slowly, safely stabilize in the shade of his broad frame.

The baby’s frantic cries began to soften into small, hiccups of relief as he felt his father's heartbeat against his cheek.

Only then did Adrian Vale turn around to face the court.

Natalie Cross stood ten feet away, her cream linen dress ruined by sweat, her blonde hair sticking to her pale cheeks. She looked completely shattered, her legal trap turned into dust, her eyes darting frantically toward the main gates as if expecting federal marshals to appear.

Grant Mercer was still holding his smartphone, but his arm had dropped three inches, the camera lens now pointing uselessly at the granite stones. His face was pale, his mouth slightly open, entirely stripped of his legal arrogance.

Adrian walked slowly toward them.

His heavy leather shoes struck the granite stones with a slow, deliberate, rhythmic cadence that sounded like an executioner’s tread. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't draw a weapon. He stood tall, broad, and terrifying, holding his breathing son against his heart.

"Grant," Adrian said softly.

The junior attorney swallowed hard, his throat clicking loudly in the quiet courtyard. "M-Mr. Vale... I was simply... I was documenting the incident for the legal team—"

"You were streaming live to an off-site server," Adrian interrupted, his pale gray eyes cutting into Grant like two surgical blades. "A server hosted by Vance & Associates in D.C."

Grant’s knees visibly buckled. The phone nearly slipped from his fingers.

"Marcus," Adrian commanded quietly without turning his head.

"Sir?" the security chief answered, stepping up to Adrian's shoulder.

"Take Mr. Mercer’s phone," Adrian instructed flatly. "Do not destroy it. Do not delete the footage. Deliver the unedited file directly to Judge Holbrook’s chambers at the federal courthouse. Let the judge watch five minutes of a mother holding the unlock key while her infant son suffocates in a forty-five-degree car."

Natalie let out a strangled, breathless sob, falling to her knees right on the hot stone driveway, burying her face in her hands as the full, catastrophic reality of her legal destruction hit her.

She hadn't just lost the custody hearing tomorrow morning.

She had just committed felony attempted murder and child endangerment on a live, unedited, high-definition video stream recorded by her own attorney.
