Chapter 5 - THE INTENSITY OF THE LOCK

The realization hit Adrian like a physical impact, but it didn't slow his pulse—it focused it into a beam of pure, terrifying clarity.
He looked down at Natalie’s trembling right hand.
The matte-black electronic key fob was resting between her fingers. As the summer wind rustled her cream linen dress, the small, green LED diagnostic light on the top corner of the plastic key fob flickered softly—a bright, unmistakable signal that the battery was fully charged, operational, and actively communicating with the SUV's onboard computer.
Her thumb was resting directly over the central UNLOCK button.
She wasn't locked out. The lock hadn't jammed. She was deliberately holding the vehicle locked, waiting for Adrian to physically attack her, waiting for him to grab her, waiting for him to commit an act of unpardonable violence on camera while his five-month-old son baked in the heat behind the glass.
They were using his own child as leverage—gambling with an infant’s life in a forty-five-degree heat wave just to secure a court victory.
"Give me the keys, Natalie," Adrian said.
His voice was dead-calm. He took one slow, deliberate step toward her across the scorching stones, keeping his hands down at his sides, completely visible, completely controlled.
Natalie’s eyes went wide with sudden, genuine fear. She realized that he had seen the LED light on the fob. She took two frantic paces backward.
"Adrian, stay back!" Natalie shrieked, exaggerating her fear for the camera. "Don't touch me! Grant, call the police! He's coming for me!"
Grant Mercer immediately stepped out from beneath the shade of the oak tree, moving quickly to position himself between Adrian and Natalie. He kept his smartphone raised flat against his chest, the camera lens tracking Adrian's every micro-movement.
"Mr. Vale, step back!" Grant commanded, his voice loud, formal, and clearly intended for the audio recording. "Do not approach Ms. Cross! You are on private property, and your behavior is being documented for the court!"
Adrian didn't look at Grant. He didn't hit him. He didn't even acknowledge the junior attorney's presence.
He knew that if he touched Grant, if he knocked the phone from his hand, the video would capture an assault on a legal officer.

Behind him, from the side of the boiling black SUV, four-year-old Maisie let out a sudden, blood-curdling scream.
"ADRIAN!" Maisie shrieked, her small voice cracking in pure, raw agony. "HIS FOOT STOPPED MOVING! ADRIAN, HELP HIM!"
