Chapter 4 - THE SHADOW WITH THE PHONE

Natalie took three hurried, panicked steps backward, her hands pressing against her face as she wept hysterically.

"It wasn't supposed to happen like this!" Natalie cried out, her voice echoing off the stone walls of the mansion. "Adrian, I swear to God, I only stepped inside for two minutes to grab my purse! I didn't know the auto-lock engaged!"

Adrian didn't look at her. He slammed his elbow against the glass a second time, trying to break the seal through sheer physical force.

THUD!

The reinforced safety glass held solid.

Slowly, agonizingly, Adrian turned his head away from the window.

"What wasn't supposed to happen like this, Natalie?" Adrian asked softly.

His voice was no longer a roar. It had dropped into a flat, deadly, razor-sharp whisper that carried far more terror than his shouting ever had.

Natalie froze, her weeping stopping for a fraction of a second, her dark eyes darting nervously past Adrian's shoulder.

Adrian’s sharp, analytical mind—the mind that had survived twenty years of corporate ambush and federal indictment—tracked her gaze.

Standing six feet behind Natalie, standing near the shade of a large ornamental oak tree, was Grant Mercer—the junior associate from his legal team.

Grant was not running. He was not looking for a rock to break the window. He was not checking on the baby.

Grant was standing perfectly still in his dark blue suit. He held his thin, black smartphone flat against his chest—positioned at a very specific, subtle sixty-degree angle, the camera lens pointing directly at Adrian's face, recording every single second of the frantic, violent scene in high-definition 4K video.

Grant’s thumb was resting on the screen, maintaining a live, encrypted stream.

Adrian’s pale gray eyes narrowed into two slits of pure, lethal ice.

He looked at Grant’s calm, detached posture. He looked at the smartphone recording his fury. Then he looked back at Natalie.

The custody hearing was scheduled for nine o'clock the following morning in federal court. Natalie’s entire legal strategy was built on demonstrating that Adrian Vale was an unstable, violent, ungovernable man—a mafia boss whose explosive temper made him an unfit father to hold legal custody of an infant child.

If Adrian lost his mind on camera, if he assaulted his ex-fiancée on his own driveway, if he destroyed property in a blind, violent rage while screaming threats—Grant’s live video stream would be entered into the court record within twelve hours, permanently stripping Adrian of his parental rights and handing full custody—along with a forty-million-dollar estate trust—to Natalie.

The entire crisis was a trap.
