Chapter 6 - THE CHOICE ON THE DRIVEWAY

Adrian turned his head.

Through the heat-shimmering glass of the rear window, five-month-old Owen lay motionless in his car seat. His tiny left foot had dropped limp over the edge of the leather harness. The flush on his face had turned from dark red to a pale, dangerous purple.

Seconds remained before brain damage or cardiac arrest set in.

At that exact moment, Marcus—the security guard—came sprinting around the corner of the mansion, his heavy face slick with sweat, holding a heavy-duty, steel-tipped tactical window breaker in his right hand.

"BOSS!" Marcus yelled, holding the steel tool out. "I GOT IT!"

Grant Mercer immediately adjusted the angle of his smartphone camera, stepping two feet closer to capture the exact moment Adrian grabbed the heavy steel weapon.

Natalie took a deep, theatrical breath behind Grant, her eyes fixed on the camera lens, preparing to deliver her final, weeping testimony to the recording.

Adrian Vale stood on the boiling stone driveway, caught between two lethal realities:

If he took the window breaker and smashed the glass, Grant’s footage would capture him wildly swinging a heavy steel weapon inches from his infant son, creating a violent visual that their legal team would spin as reckless endangerment of a child.

If he tried to force Natalie to hand over the key fob, he would be recorded physically assaulting the child's mother on camera, guaranteeing his immediate arrest by federal marshals.

If he waited another sixty seconds for the police or paramedics to arrive, his son would die in the backseat.

The trap was absolute. It was designed to destroy him regardless of which choice he made.

Adrian looked once at his unconscious son trapped behind the dark, scalding glass.

He looked once at the smartphone recording him in 4K resolution.

Then he looked directly into Natalie’s pale, weeping face.

A strange, terrifying transformation came over Adrian Vale’s features. The rage vanished. The panic melted away. What remained was the cold, unshakeable, lethal sovereign who had ruled the Baltimore docks for twenty years.

He reached his hand out toward Marcus.

"Give me the tool," Adrian commanded flatly.
