Chapter 39 - The Assembly of the Fallen

Twenty-four hours later.

The quiet, cedar-sided house on the edge of Miller’s Creek stood empty. Leo had been moved to a fortified military base in Fort Meade, Maryland, placed under round-the-clock protective custody by the few active-duty DEVGRU commanders Damon still trusted with his life.

In the damp basement of the farmhouse, the floorboards had been torn up, revealing a hidden subterranean bunker that Marcus Vance’s contractors had never known existed.

Damon stood in front of a long steel workbench. On the table lay three black Pelican cases, their latches unfastened.

Inside were not standard hunting rifles or defensive handguns.

There was a suppressed HK416 with custom match-grade barrels, an FN SCAR-H chambered in 7.62 NATO, twelve fragmentation grenades, tactical breaching charges, and four sets of encrypted satellite communicators.

A heavy knock sounded at the storm cellar doors above.

Damon didn't draw his weapon. He simply reached into his pocket and pressed a release button under the bench.

The heavy steel doors creaked open.

Descending the wooden steps were three men. None of them wore uniforms. None of them smiled.

The first was Jackson "Jax" Reed, former lead breacher for Red Squadron, missing three fingers on his left hand from an IED in Ramadi, but carrying a heavy tactical rucksack like it was made of feathers.

The second was Elias "Preacher" Vance, a master sniper with over eighty confirmed long-range kills in the Helmand Province, his eyes sharp and unforgiving behind wire-rimmed glasses.

The third was a woman—Kallie Vance, former intelligence officer for the Joint Special Operations Command, carrying a hardened military laptop and three satellite uplinks.

They stood in the dim light of the cellar, looking at Damon.

"Mack's out of surgery," Jax said simply. "The doctors say he’ll live. But he won't ever shoot a shotgun with his right arm again."

Damon nodded once. "I know."

Preacher stepped forward, unzipping a long rifle bag and setting a customized McMillan TAC-50 onto the workbench. "We heard Harrison opened a contract on the kid. Is it true?"

"It’s true," Damon said. "And the Bureau can't touch him. He’s holed up in a private compound outside Zurich. Twelve square miles of private alpine land, guarded by two hundred active contractors."

A dark, dangerous smile spread across Jax's scarred face. "Two hundred? That almost makes it a fair fight."

Kallie flipped open her laptop, illuminating their faces in cold, blue LED light. "I mapped the private airspace above the canton. Harrison has four anti-air radar installations, a private runway, and an underground bunker built into the mountain granite. The Swiss authorities won't intervene unless there’s an act of war."

Damon picked up the HK416, checking the chamber with a single, practiced motion. The steel clicked into battery with a sharp, definitive snap.

"Then we give them an act of war," Damon said.
