Chapter 30 - The Shadow in the Study

Marcus Vance slammed his crystal scotch glass onto his mahogany desk, spilling amber liquid across a stack of land deeds. It was four in the morning. His phone hadn't rung once in the last two hours.
"Where are they?!" Vance snarled to himself, rubbing his bloodshot eyes in frustration. "Four trained men against one pathetic factory worker! How hard is it to clear a damn farmhouse?!"
He turned toward the window, looking out into the foggy darkness covering his vast estate. He took comfort in the sheer scale of his wealth. He owned this town. He owned the police chief, the county commissioners, the judges, and the school administrators. No nobody from the wrong side of the tracks was going to humiliate his family, ruin his son’s athletic career, and walk away clean.
"You're looking in the wrong direction, Marcus."
The voice came from the darkest corner of the study, behind the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. It was quiet, deep, and possessed an unnatural stillness that froze the blood in Vance’s veins.
Vance spun around, knocking his leather chair backward. "Who's there?! Frank! Thomas!" he screamed, reaching for the panic button beneath the lip of his desk.
Before his fingers could touch the brass button, Damon stepped out of the shadow.
He didn't rush. He simply moved with the terrifying speed of striking lightning. His hand clamped around Vance’s wrist, twisting it sharply until the older man cried out in agony and dropped to his knees behind the desk.
"Scream again," Damon whispered, leaning down until his eyes were inches from Vance's, "and I will break every finger on this hand, one by one, before your guards can reach the top of the stairs."
Vance choked back his scream, staring up in absolute, unadulterated horror.
Standing over him was Damon. He wore no tactical mask. He carried no gun. But his eyes were not the eyes of a mortal man; they were the eyes of an ancient, merciless executioner who had stared into the abyss of war and emerged completely hollowed of pity.
"How... how did you get in here?" Vance stammered, his body shaking uncontrollably. "Where are the men I hired?"
"Dispatched," Damon replied smoothly. "Tied to trees. Sleeping on my kitchen floor. Waiting for the authorities."
"You... you can't touch me!" Vance spat, trying to summon a shred of his usual arrogance, though his voice wavered with pathetic weakness. "I have millions! I have lawyers! I have friends in Washington! If anything happens to me, you will spend the rest of your life in a supermax facility!"
Damon reached into his pocket and placed the small black flash drive gently on the mahogany desk between them.
"I don't need to touch you, Marcus," Damon said softly. "On this drive is every wire transfer, every offshore account, and the audio recording of you ordering the murder of my thirteen-year-old son."
Vance’s face drained of every ounce of color. He looked from the drive to Damon’s face, his jaw trembling. "You... you hacked my servers?"
"In twenty minutes, this entire file will be delivered to the Department of Justice, the IRS Criminal Investigation Division, and the Eastern District of Pennsylvania Organized Crime Task Force," Damon said, his voice dropping into a chilling cadence. "By sunrise, every asset you own will be frozen. Your bank accounts will be seized. Your mansion will be padlocked. Your son will never wrestle again, because the Vance name will be synonymous with treason, murder-for-hire, and disgrace."
"No... no, please," Vance whimpered, tears of sheer panic welling in his eyes. "Take the money! I’ll give you five million dollars! Ten million! Just give me the drive! Name your price!"
Damon looked down at the weeping, broken man with pure, unvarnished disgust.
"My price was simple," Damon said, leaning down so his words burned into Vance's ear. "You should have taught your son how to behave on the wrestling mat."
Damon turned his back and walked toward the open balcony doors, vanishing into the cold night mist as silently as he had arrived.
Downstairs, the front doors of the mansion were suddenly kicked open with tremendous force. Heavy boots pounded against the hardwood foyer, accompanied by the blinding glare of tactical flashlights and the barking of military working dogs.
Marcus Vance scrambled to his feet, gasping for breath, stumbling out onto the hallway landing. "Frank! Thomas! Did you get him?!"
He looked down over the banister, expecting his private security guards.
Instead, staring up at him through the blinding tactical beams were eight men clad in full black combat gear, carrying suppressed submachine guns, wearing unidentifiable insignia on their shoulders.

A tall, broad-shouldered man at the front of the assault team raised his weapon, pointing it directly at Vance's chest.
"Marcus Vance?" the man asked in a deep, gravelly voice that carried a foreign accent. "We aren't here for the wrestler. We're here for the debt you owe to Red Squadron."
