Chapter 28 - The Fortress on Blackwood Ridge

By three-thirty in the morning, Damon had safely delivered Evan and Buster to Miller’s fortified compound. After watching the heavy iron gates close behind his truck, Damon turned his vehicle around, drove back toward town, and parked two miles outside the gates of Blackwood Ridge.

The Vance estate was an ostentatious display of generational wealth. Spread across eighty acres of manicured rolling hills, it featured a twelve-thousand-square-foot neo-colonial mansion, private equestrian stables, a heated swimming pavilion, and an eight-foot wrought-iron security fence surrounding the entire perimeter. Security cameras with infrared capability were mounted every fifty yards along the brick pillars.

To a common burglar or local detective, the estate was an impenetrable fortress.

To Damon, it was a joke.

He dressed entirely in dark civilian athletic gear—black hoodie, dark cargo pants, running shoes with rubber soles that made zero sound on pavement. He carried no firearms now. A man carrying a firearm onto a private estate invited capital felony charges; a man carrying an encrypted flash drive, a signal-jammer, and a lock-bypass kit was simply an unwelcome ghost.

He bypassed the front gate entirely, moving through the dense tree line along the southern boundary where the horse pastures met the woods. He identified a blind spot in the camera sweep—a ten-degree dead zone caused by an overgrown weeping willow branch.

Damon leaped, caught the top rail of the iron fence with one hand, pulled his body weight upward with explosive upper-body strength, and dropped silently onto the grass on the other side without disturbing a single blade of ivy.

He moved across the pasture, staying low against the wooden fences.

The main house was lit up like a Christmas tree. Marcus Vance was not sleeping. He was sitting in his second-floor study, waiting for the phone call confirming that Damon and his son had been eliminated, clearing the way for his family's reputation to remain pristine and unblemished.

Through the large French windows on the second floor, Damon could see Vance pacing back and forth, clutching a glass of scotch in one hand and a mobile phone in the other. Downstairs, in the illuminated foyer, two private security guards in suits sat by the grand staircase, drinking coffee, oblivious to the fact that the perimeter had already been breached.

Damon didn't need to fight the guards. Violence was merely one tool in an operator's arsenal, and often the crudest. The most effective weapon against a man like Marcus Vance was exposure.

Damon slipped around the back of the house, locating the exterior junction box that controlled the estate’s secondary server rack and high-speed fiber-optic network.

He pulled a multi-tool from his pocket, unscrewed the metal casing with practiced speed, and plugged a pocket-sized military decryption dongle directly into the primary ethernet terminal.

The device began running an automated brute-force packet extraction, harvesting every email, every financial transfer, every offshore escrow account, and every encrypted message stored on the Vance family servers.

The screen on Damon's handheld device scrolled with thousands of lines of green data.

And then, deep within the financial ledgers, Damon found something far darker than simple municipal corruption.
