Chapter 37 - The Hammer Falls

Damon Cole did not enter the floor as a man. He arrived as an extinction event.

He cleared the doorway in a dead sprint, carrying the captured SIG MPX tucked tight against his shoulder. His eyes were wide, black, and completely devoid of human warmth.

The rear guard of the breach team spun toward the sudden noise, but Damon had already acquired the target.

Two suppressed rounds punched through the operator's eye protection before his rifle could even clear his waist. The man crumpled backward onto the blood-slicked linoleum.

The contractor standing over Mack whipped around, abandoning his kill to face the new threat. He squeezed the trigger of his carbine, sending a stream of armor-piercing rounds down the hallway.

Damon didn't flinch. He dropped into a sliding knee-tackle beneath the cone of fire, the rounds chewing through the ceiling panels just inches above his head. He closed the distance in half a second, slamming his entire body weight into the contractor's thighs, sweeping the man off his feet and driving him skull-first into the concrete corner of the nurse's station.

The impact sounded like a bowling ball hitting pavement.

Damon scrambled to his feet, drew his P226, and put two rounds into the downed man’s chest plate, ensuring the threat was neutralized.

The third floor fell into absolute, ringing silence.

Only the rhythmic, distant whine of hospital fire alarms broke the quiet. Smoke hung thick and acrid in the air, drifting lazily through the ruined door of Room 314.

Damon stepped into the room, his weapon lowered at the low ready.

Mack was slumped against the wall, his hand clamped over a deep, bleeding wound in his shoulder. He looked up, his single eye wet with pain, but a fierce grin broke across his scarred face.

"Took you... long enough, Commander," Mack wheezed, coughing up a spatter of blood.

Damon knelt beside his old teammate, his fingers pressing into the pressure point above Mack’s collarbone to stem the arterial flow. "You held the line, Mack. You held the line."

"Boy's under the bed," Mack whispered, his voice fading. "Didn't let 'em touch him. Not a scratch."

Damon turned his head slowly.

Beneath the ruined, bullet-riddled frame of the hospital bed, two small, trembling eyes stared out from the dust.

"Leo," Damon called softly.

The boy burst out from under the bed, throwing his arms around his father's neck, sobbing uncontrollably into Damon's blood-splattered tactical vest. "Dad! Dad! They were going to kill Uncle Mack! They were going to kill us!"

Damon wrapped his massive, calloused arms around his son, burying his face in the boy's hair. For the first time in fifteen years, Damon’s hands trembled. He held his boy tight, shielding him from the bodies, the blood, and the devastation that his past had dragged into their quiet life.

"I’m here, Leo," Damon whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "I’m here. It’s over."

"Is it?" Mack gasped from the floor, his face pale from blood loss.

Damon looked over Leo’s shoulder, staring at the encrypted phone lying near the dead contractor’s hand. On the screen, a single notification was blinking red:
