Chapter 38 - The Aftermath in the Mist

By 4:00 AM, Miller’s Creek Memorial Hospital was surrounded by a multi-agency task force.
The FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team had established a perimeter, while Pennsylvania State Police troopers cordoned off three square miles around the facility. Medics rushed Mack Coleman straight into surgery, his vital signs stable despite severe trauma to his shoulder and chest.
Marcus Vance was already in federal custody, held without bail on charges ranging from racketeering and treason to attempted murder of a protected federal witness. His son, the five-time state wrestling champion whose arrogant kick on the gym mat had started this cascading avalanche of violence, sat alone in the police station lobby, shivering in an oversized thermal blanket, completely stripped of his swagger, weeping into his mother’s coat.
In a private debriefing room on the hospital’s ground floor, Damon Cole sat across from Special Agent Sarah Vance—no relation to Marcus—the lead investigator for the Eastern District’s Organized Crime Task Force.
She laid a heavy leather dossier onto the stainless-steel table between them.
"We pulled forty terabytes of encrypted data off Marcus Vance’s private servers before his technicians could wipe them," Agent Vance said, studying Damon's impassive face. "It’s all here. Bribery of state officials, illegal arms shipments through Philadelphia ports, and direct financial pipelines to a PMC operating out of Geneva."
"Aegis Vanguard," Damon said, not touching the file.
She paused, narrowing her eyes. "You know the name?"
"I know the man who runs it," Damon replied. "General Thomas Harrison."
Agent Vance leaned back, crossing her arms. "Harrison is untouchable, Cole. He operates under three layers of diplomatic immunity granted by sovereign defense contracts. We can seize Vance’s money. We can lock Marcus away for thirty years. But Harrison? We can't even serve him with a federal subpoena."
Damon slowly stood up. He walked to the window, watching the morning fog roll over the Appalachian ridge outside.
"The federal government operates within the law, Agent Vance," Damon said quietly. "I operate within the mission."
"Cole, don't do this," she warned, standing up as well. "If you go after Harrison, you aren't a retired veteran defending his family anymore. You become an enemy combatant on sovereign soil. The Bureau will have to track you down."
Damon turned back to her. His eyes were cold, ancient, and completely resolved.
"My son has two cracked ribs because of an arrogant kid whose father thought money made him God," Damon said, his voice barely louder than a whisper. "And my brother-in-arms is on a surgical table because Harrison thought he could settle an old score by slaughtering a child."
He pointed toward the hallway, where Leo sat sleeping under the watchful guard of two heavily armed state troopers.

"The law couldn't protect my boy on that wrestling mat," Damon said. "And it won't protect Harrison in Geneva."
