Chapter 8 - THE COLD DRIVE TO THE DOCKS

Outside, the Chicago blizzard had turned the highways into desolate, icy ghost roads.

An unmarked, midnight-blue armored SUV backed quietly out of a concealed side garage at the far edge of the Moretti estate. The vehicle carried no license plates, its windows were heavily tinted, and its high-powered V8 engine purred with a low, predatory rumble.

Alessandro sat behind the wheel.

His right hand gripped the leather steering wheel with crushing, absolute strength. There was no tremor. No weakness. The poison that had been slowly crippling his body was still in his system, but the sheer, overwhelming surge of adrenaline had temporarily rewired his nervous system, masking the symptoms under a wave of lethal focus.

He drove east, toward the industrial port district along the frozen shores of Lake Michigan.

The destination supplied by the encrypted caller was Pier 42—an abandoned, rotting shipping facility built in the 1950s that had once belonged to his father’s original smuggling operations. It was a place surrounded by miles of open ice, rusty grain silos, and freezing water.

As the SUV sliced through the blinding white snow, Alessandro reached over to the passenger seat and opened a heavy tactical case.

Inside lay two high-capacity handguns, several spare magazines, a tactical knife, and a small, pressurized auto-injector containing a high-dose neurological stimulant—a military-grade drug designed to temporarily override nerve blockages in combat situations.

He knew his body was living on borrowed time. The adrenaline would eventually fade, and when it did, the poison's physiological toll would hit him twice as hard, likely inducing total systemic collapse.

He didn't care.

He picked up the auto-injector, pressed it firmly against his left thigh, and triggered the charge. A sharp, burning sting flared through his leg, sending a jolt of artificial fire coursing through his veins.

His vision sharpened to a razor's edge. The dark, snowy road ahead became blindingly clear.

"Ten minutes," Alessandro said to himself, looking at his watch. "That's all I need."
