Chapter 3 - THE PARADOX OF THE TREMBLING LIEUTENANT

Vittorio did not argue. He offered a brief, respectful nod of his head, reached out with his right hand, and gathered the thick leather folder from the desk.

As Vittorio lifted the folder, something happened that made the air in the study freeze solid.

Vittorio’s right hand—the hand holding the heavy leather edge—began to tremble.

It wasn't a subtle movement. It was a clear, visible, sharp tremor that caused the thick paper pages inside the binder to rustle loudly against one another. Vittorio’s fingers twitched violently against the brass clasp, his knuckles turning pale as he struggled to maintain his grip.

Alessandro’s eyes darted down to Vittorio’s hand instantly.

Vittorio caught Alessandro looking. A sudden, sharp flash of panic—the first crack in his polished, iron facade—crossed Vittorio’s face. He quickly pulled his left hand over, gripped the folder with both hands to stabilize it, tucked the binder tightly under his arm, and turned on his heel.

"Goodnight, Alessandro," Vittorio said quickly, his voice tight, before stepping rapidly out of the room and pulling the heavy oak door shut behind him.

Alessandro remained seated behind his desk, motionless as a statue.

He stared at the closed door, his mind racing through a maze of dark, sudden calculations.

Slowly, Alessandro brought his own right hand up from beneath the desk and rested it on the leather armrest of his chair. The involuntary tremor was still there, steady and persistent, pulsing through his thumb and index finger.

He looked from his own trembling hand back to the closed door where Vittorio had just stood.

Alessandro had assumed his neurological condition was a tragic, random medical curse—a genetic defect or a rare autoimmune degeneration that had struck him down in his prime. He had assumed Vittorio’s contingency folder was a pragmatic, albeit cold, response to his recent medical absences and secret doctor visits.

But Vittorio’s hand had just trembled in the exact same manner, with the exact same frequency.

Vittorio was fifty-two and had been in perfect health his entire life. He did not have a degenerative brain disease.

Alessandro’s expression transformed from cold anger into something far darker, far more calculating, and deeply disturbing.

He realized in that quiet moment that he was not dying from a natural illness. He was being poisoned—slowly, systematically, and deliberately—with a trace toxin or heavy metal that mimicked neurological decay. And whoever was administering the poison had been careless enough to contaminate themselves, or perhaps Vittorio was taking a lesser dose of the same compound to build immunity.

Vittorio hadn't been preparing for Alessandro's death after receiving a medical diagnosis. Vittorio had been preparing for Alessandro's death because Vittorio was the one orchestrating it.
