Chapter 2 - THE SUCCESSION FOLDER AND THE CHESSBOARD

Twenty minutes later, Alessandro sat behind the massive executive desk in his private third-floor study. The room was lined with thousands of leather-bound historical volumes, dark oil paintings of forgotten European battles, and a heavy, antique chess set made of carved obsidian and white jade.
A fire crackled in the hearth, throwing warm orange light across the room, but the air remained tense and heavy. Alessandro sat back in his high-backed leather chair, his right hand tucked completely out of sight beneath the edge of the heavy desk, resting firmly on his thigh.
The heavy oak door to the study swung open with a soft, silent glide.
Vittorio Russo entered.
At fifty-two, Vittorio was Alessandro’s oldest lieutenant, his most trusted advisor, and the closest thing Alessandro had to a true friend in a world built on blood and paranoia. Vittorio had silver-streaked dark hair, impeccably groomed, and wore a custom charcoal three-piece suit with a silk pocket square. His manners were polished, his voice calm, and he carried himself with the quiet, effortless confidence of a man who had helped build the Moretti empire from the ground up alongside Alessandro's late father.
In his left hand, Vittorio carried a thick, dark leather folder bound with brass clasps.
He crossed the Persian rug without waiting for an invitation, stopped in front of the desk, and placed the heavy folder directly on the polished wood, right beside Alessandro’s elbow.
"Contingency planning," Vittorio said smoothly, his tone businesslike, completely neutral, and devoid of any obvious emotion.
Alessandro did not move for a moment. His dark eyes remained fixed on Vittorio’s face, searching the older man’s calm, unreadable expression before he slowly extended his left hand and flipped open the heavy leather cover of the folder.
Inside lay dozens of neatly typed pages, organization charts, bank account numbers, shell company registries, and territorial mapping overlays of the entire Midwest syndicate. Names of senior capos were listed alongside detailed succession rankings, legal power-of-attorney documents, and transfer protocols for off-shore trust accounts in Zurich and the Cayman Islands.
Alessandro did not read the fine print. He didn't need to. He recognized the administrative architecture of an empire preparing for the death of its king.
Slowly, deliberately, Alessandro closed the cover of the folder with a soft, heavy thud. He leaned forward, resting his chin on his left hand, his gaze locking onto Vittorio with lethal intensity.
"How long have you had this ready?" Alessandro asked, his voice low, measured, and dripping with dangerous quiet.
Vittorio stood perfectly still under the weight of Alessandro’s glare. He did not blink. He did not shift his weight. He said nothing.
The silence in the study stretched for five agonizing seconds, filled only by the crackle of the fireplace and the ticking of a grandfather clock in the corner.

Alessandro’s eyes narrowed slightly.
"Get out," Alessandro said softly.
