Chapter 6 - THE SILENT TREMOR STOPS

Four hours had passed. It was now past eleven o’clock at night.
The blizzard outside had reached a deafening howl, rattling the thick glass panes of the third-floor study. The mansion was dead silent, dark, and hollow.
Alessandro sat alone behind his massive mahogany desk in the unlit room. The fire in the hearth had died down to a bed of dull, glowing red embers, casting long, ominous shadows across the walls and the obsidian chess set.
He sat completely unmoving in the dark, staring at nothing. His heavy black overcoat was still on his shoulders. On the desk in front of him sat his encrypted mobile phone, resting on the dark leather blotter beside a small, unlabelled glass vial of clear liquid—the liquid he had discovered hidden inside his private decanter earlier that evening.
Suddenly, the phone on the desk erupted into life.
The sharp, high-pitched ringtone cut through the dark room like a razor blade.
Alessandro did not jump. He did not flinch. He slowly extended his trembling right arm, his twitching fingers reaching out to pick up the glowing device. He swiped the screen with his left thumb and lifted the phone to his ear.
He did not speak. He waited.
Through the speaker, over the low hiss of static and encrypted signal scrambling, came a heavy, distorted male voice—a voice pitch-shifted through an electronic modifier to render it completely unrecognizable.
"We have the girl," the voice said, cold, mechanical, and direct.
Alessandro’s dark eyes slowly lifted, staring into the shadow-filled corner of the room. His right hand, wrapped tightly around the frame of the phone, was shaking violently, the metal casing vibrating against his ear.
The voice on the other end paused for two seconds, letting the silence hang in the air, before adding a final, quiet sentence—a sentence containing a single name, a specific location, and a piece of information that was never supposed to leave Vittorio’s private vault.
Alessandro’s entire body went completely, terrifyingly still.
The mechanical, involuntary tremor in his right hand suddenly stopped.
The twitching muscles in his thumb, wrist, and forearm locked into absolute, rigid perfection. The neurological misfire, the creeping weakness, the months of physical betrayal—everything was instantly overridden by a massive, violent surge of pure, unadulterated adrenaline and lethal clarity.
His hand became solid as granite, holding the phone with terrifying, iron stability.
The exhausted, resigned expression that had haunted Alessandro’s face for six long months melted away in a single second. In its place emerged something ancient, cold, and monstrously dangerous—the face of a predator who had just been handed absolute, uncompromising purpose.
He did not answer the caller. He simply ended the call and placed the steady phone back onto the desk.

Slowly, effortlessly, Alessandro rose from his heavy leather chair. His legs showed no weakness. His knees did not buckle. His right hand remained perfectly still at his side as he reached into his desk drawer, pulled out a heavy, black semi-automatic pistol, and racked the slide with a sharp, lethal metallic click.
He had been given a reason not to die.
