Chapter 7 - THE ARCHITECTURE OF TREASON

Alessandro descended the private rear staircase of the mansion, moving with the silent, fluid grace of a shadow. His black overcoat swished softly against his boots, the heavy pistol tucked securely into his shoulder holster beneath his jacket.
He did not head toward the main garage where his regular drivers and security detail waited. Instead, he navigated the narrow, subterranean service corridors that ran beneath the estate—corridors built during Prohibition that only the head of the family knew existed in their entirety.
He stopped outside a small, reinforced steel door near the boiler room.
Using an antique brass key he kept around his neck beneath his shirt, he unlocked the door and stepped into a small, dust-covered security monitoring station. This was his private, unmapped CCTV bunker—a system completely isolated from the mansion's main security network that Vittorio oversaw.
Alessandro sat down in front of the monitors, flicked a series of toggle switches, and brought up the archived footage from four hours ago at the rear service entrance.
On the high-definition screen, the scene played out in grim clarity.
He watched the Housemaid and the Little Girl step out into the blinding snow. He saw the dark luxury sedan waiting in the courtyard. He saw the four masked men step forward.
Alessandro paused the video and zoomed in on the driver's side mirror of the dark sedan.
Reflected in the wet glass of the side mirror, illuminated briefly by the amber parking lights, was the partial face of the man sitting in the front passenger seat—the man coordinating the abduction.
It was not a rival gang member from the South Side. It was not a federal agent.
It was Marcus—Vittorio’s personal driver and right-hand enforcer.
Alessandro leaned closer to the monitor, his dark eyes tracking every detail. He saw Marcus reach out the window and hand a thick, sealed white envelope to the lead kidnapper before the car sped off into the blizzard.
Alessandro rewound the tape ten minutes further.
On the screen, two hours before the kidnapping, Vittorio himself had walked down that same service corridor. Vittorio had stopped near the kitchen pantry, pulled a tiny glass dropper from his pocket, and emptied three clear drops into the silver decanter that was placed on Alessandro’s private dinner tray every evening.
Alessandro stared at the screen, a low, dark chuckle escaping his throat.
The strategy was brilliant in its cruelty. Vittorio had been poisoning him for months, creating the illusion of a terminal neurological disease to force the family’s capos into accepting a peaceful transition of power. But Vittorio knew that Alessandro, even in a weakened state, was too stubborn, too dangerous to simply step down voluntarily.

So Vittorio had taken the one innocent life in the mansion—the Little Girl whom Alessandro had shown a rare moment of softness toward—to use as the ultimate lever. Vittorio intended to force Alessandro into signing the succession documents in exchange for the child's life, before executing them both and framing a rival family for the tragedy.
"You calculated everything, Vittorio," Alessandro murmured to the glowing screen, his voice flat and terrifyingly calm. "Except what happens when I stop caring about surviving."
