Chapter 9 - THE EMPEROR'S KEY

Nora crossed the dark master suite, her sneakers silent against the hardwood floor. She dropped to her knees beside the massive mahogany executive desk—a heavy, custom-built masterpiece of carved wood that Raymond had used for over twenty years.

She opened the bottom right drawer, reaching her hand deep into the dark interior. Her fingers searched along the rear wooden wall until she felt a tiny, hidden seam. She pressed firmly against the flush panel.

Click.

A concealed spring mechanism released, and a small, velvet-lined drawer popped open two inches.

Inside the hidden compartment lay three crucial items: a small, dark red leather ledger containing encrypted bank codes, a sleek satellite phone with an encrypted communication key, and a polished silver barrel key attached to a heavy steel token stamped with a roaring lion crest.

Nora picked up the items, her hands trembling as she brought them straight back to Raymond’s bedside.

She held the silver key up to the ambient lamp light. "What is this?"

Raymond’s eyes locked onto the silver key with absolute priority. His broad chest rose as he gathered his strength to speak.

"My... loyal... men..." Raymond rasped, his voice growing clearer and more focused with every passing minute as his lungs cleared. "Marcus... and... the guards... at the south dock..."

He gestured with his eyes toward the sleek satellite phone in her hand.

"Turn... it... on..." Raymond commanded softly. "Press... speed... dial... one..."

Nora quickly flipped open the encrypted satellite phone, powering on the screen. She pressed speed dial key '1' and held the phone directly against Raymond’s ear as the line began to ring through an encrypted frequency.

After three sharp rings, a deep, raspy voice answered on the other end of the line.

"Boss? Is that you? We've been told you were in a permanent coma—"

"Marcus..." Raymond spoke into the phone, his voice steady, cold, and dripping with absolute authority despite his physical state. "Christopher... betrayed me. Wallace... is poisoning my line."

A heavy, shocked silence hung on the other end of the line for two seconds, followed by the sound of a heavy slide being racked on a firearm.

"Give us the word, Boss," Marcus growled, his voice trembling with fierce, unyielding loyalty. "We're ten minutes away."
