Chapter 6 - THE CLICK OF THE HANDLE

The silence that followed her declaration was heavy, dangerous, and absolute.
Raymond’s large, calloused fingers—weakened by weeks of systemic poisoning—exerted every remaining shred of his formidable strength. Slowly, weakly, his tattooed fingers curled upward, tightening around Nora’s slender wrist in a firm, desperate grip that anchored her to the side of his bed.
Nora looked down at his grip, then up at his blue-gray eye. For the first time, a profound, unspoken understanding passed between them. Raymond wasn't just a powerful crime boss, and Nora wasn't just a hired nurse. They were two survivors trapped inside a snake pit, surrounded by enemies who considered them both entirely disposable.

Click.
A faint, sharp metallic sound echoed through the quiet room from the direction of the suite's double entrance doors.
It was the distinct, unmistakable sound of a key turning in a lock from the outside corridor.
Nora’s entire body went rigid. Her pulse spiked to a deafening roar in her ears. She slowly turned her head, her brown eyes locking onto the heavy brass door handles situated twenty feet away in the shadows.
The right brass handle began to move. It rotated downward slowly, silently, inch by inch.
Raymond’s blue-gray eye shifted sharply toward the doorway, his pupils dilating with intense alertness despite his physical paralysis.
Nora turned her head back toward Raymond, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Someone's coming in," she breathed in a silent gasp.
Raymond looked back at her. His eyelid closed smoothly once, giving her a single, sharp blink—a signal of absolute tactical focus.

Don't move. Be ready.
The heavy mahogany door creaked open two inches into the dark room, letting a narrow beam of harsh yellow light from the hallway cut across the hardwood floor toward the edge of Raymond’s bed.
