Chapter 2 - BLINKS AND BURDENED TRUTHS

The room felt as though it had lost all gravity. Nora sat frozen in the armchair, holding her sleeping baby tightly against her chest, her brown eyes wide with absolute astonishment. For eight long weeks, every doctor, specialist, and family member had treated Raymond Winslow as a vacant shell—a man whose mind had dissolved alongside his physical mobility.
Yet, as Nora looked into his partially opened blue-gray eye, she saw no cloudiness, no confusion, and no brain death. The eye was cold, sharp, and burning with an intense, razor-sharp intelligence.
Nora leaned her head down, hovering just inches above his face, ensuring her voice remained below a whisper so the security cameras in the corners of the room wouldn't catch her words.
"Mr. Winslow... can you hear me?" Nora asked, her heart hammering violently in her chest. "If you can hear me... one blink for yes. Two for no."
Raymond’s eyelid closed smoothly, held shut for one deliberate second, and then opened back up.
One blink. Yes.
A shiver ran down Nora’s spine. The implications hit her with the force of a freight train. Every conversation held in this bedroom over the last two months—every financial discussion, every private security report, every casual remark made by visitors—had been heard and processed by the mastermind himself.
"Can you hear everything people say in this room?" Nora asked softly, testing the limits of his awareness.
Raymond’s eyelid closed and opened once more.
One blink. Yes.
Nora swallowed hard, her pulse racing. "Do you know who I am?"
One blink.
Raymond’s throat worked slowly as he attempted to mobilize his paralyzed facial muscles. His jaw tightened, his sharp features straining against the heavy neurological block locking his voice away. A faint, raspy vibration hissed from his dry lips, barely louder than a breath of air.
"Chris... to... pher..." Raymond forced out, the syllables dragging through his teeth with immense effort.
Nora leaned closer, her ear nearly touching his dark wavy hair. "Christopher? Your nephew?"
Raymond gave another slow, deliberate blink. His blue-gray eye shifted sideways, pointing toward the heavy mahogany door leading into the master suite's private hallway. His vocal cords strained again, channeling every ounce of his formidable willpower into two barely audible words.
"He's... speeding... it... up..." Raymond rasped.
May you like
Nora’s eyes widened in horror. Before she could ask what he meant, the muffled sound of heavy, polished dress shoes echoed down the marble floor of the corridor outside.
Raymond’s eye instantly snapped shut. His jaw relaxed, and his face instantly returned to the blank, unreadable mask of a comatose patient.
