Chapter 9 - THE PENULTIMATE BATTLE

The fourth Marine was Corporal Garcia—the man she had defeated days earlier.

Garcia stepped onto the mat with a look of deep respect in his eyes. He didn't rush her. He knew better than anyone in his squad how dangerous she was when underestimated.

Because Claire was visibly fatigued, her breathing heavy and her movements slightly slower, Garcia used his technical skill to keep her moving. He circled her, forcing her to pivot, chipping away at her remaining stamina.

They engaged in a beautiful, high-level grappling exchange that lasted nearly six minutes. Garcia swept her once, taking top position, but Claire defended flawlessly, using her guard to prevent him from passing.

With a final, desperate burst of energy, Claire inverted her hips from the bottom, swept Garcia over her head, and secured a tight armbar as they hit the mat.

Garcia tapped immediately, smiling faintly as he shook her hand and walked off.

"Winner by submission: Mitchell! Match four!"

Claire stood up slowly. Her legs were trembling slightly. Sweat was dripping off her chin onto the black mat. She wiped her forehead with the back of her wrapped wrist, her lungs gasping for oxygen.

The fifth Marine was Sergeant Kowalski—a massive 230-pound powerhouse who was the largest man in Force Recon.

Kowalski didn't try to technique her. He walked up, grabbed her by her collar and waist, and literally lifted her into the air, driving her down onto the mat with brutal, crushing force.

BOOM!

The impact knocked the wind clean out of Claire’s lungs. A sharp pain shot through her ribs.

The crowd gasped. Master Chief Turner took a step closer to the mat, his knuckles white.

Kowalski immediately smothered her, burying his heavy shoulder into her chin, pinning her beneath his 230 pounds.

"Give it up, Lieutenant!" Kowalski growled in her ear. "You're done!"

Claire’s vision blurred. The ceiling lights spun above her. Her body screamed at her to quit, to tap the mat, to let the agonizing pressure stop.

Then her hand brushed the rough, frayed black belt wrapped around her waist.

She remembered her father’s words: A belt doesn't make you strong—it just reminds you of the sweat you poured out.

Claire opened her eyes. The pain faded behind a wall of absolute, icy focus.

She didn't try to push Kowalski off—that was impossible. Instead, she used her compact frame to slip her arm inside his neck frame, inch by painful inch, while suffocating beneath his weight. She reached behind his neck, locked her hands together in a guillotine grip, and arched her back with every remaining ounce of strength in her core.

Kowalski’s throat was crushed against her forearm. His eyes went wide with shock as he realized he couldn't breathe. He tried to pull his head free, but her grip was unbreakable.

After five agonizing seconds of struggling, the massive 230-pound Marine tapped the mat frantically.

"Winner by submission: Mitchell! Match five!"

The entire gym blew open in a chaotic roar of cheers.

Kowalski rolled off her, panting heavily.

Claire remained on her back for three seconds, staring at the halogen lights above, her chest heaving, her ribs aching, her body completely spent.

Then, slowly, agonizingly, she pushed herself up onto her knees, then onto her feet.

She stood at the center of the mat, trembling, exhausted, but unbroken.

She turned her head to face the final man standing at the edge of the floor.

Staff Sergeant Marcus Bennett.
